I only use Blick pencils! I only buy from Dick Blick! any other pencil is.......you get the idea..... Loved the Amiga post, which brought back some really great memories. Tim is still at it, doing some really cool things and not really getting the credit he deserves.
Jesus though the tricaster is like a zillion dollars... why? Why is there no modern Video Toaster for Windows that just uses today's super powered graphics cards but still has the neat billions of effects... I know that's what tricaster is SUPPOSED to be but wasn't the whole point of Toaster affordable? I think there is a HUGE market for people who say are very good directors or editors but not after effects pros to have something that easily generates some flashy snazzy transitions and text and key effects in real time. Maybe some software does exist and I don't know about it. In film I never need these things but occasionally I get some infomercial type stuff that wants that type of nfl football TV goofy transitions...
Just go a Mac Mini i7 with the 6250M card option and love it. I did consider getting a widoze box but last time I looked creative suite was $2.2k. I've use Premiere Pro 5.5 on my Mac and FCP X, although lacking in quite a few areas, works quite nicely for my needs and is years ahead of PPro in some areas. So you unemotional Gates lovers (see Steve's Bio for my reference) why don't you price me out a system for $950 (mac mini) and $299 FCP X in PC terms. My monitor was $270 I think, IPC Viewsonic.
I'd also be open to a hackintosh but I am dubious about the stability of it - don't they still have some issues?
When I get out of Edius 6 and get onto a mac running Final Cut pro I literally feel like I am in goop, or a tar or sand pit of some sort. If Edius 6 could combine with Sony Vegas Pro I think we would have the ultimate editing software. I find Premiere Pro a clunky badly coded mess that is not nearly as responsive on either a mac or a PC. I use Encore but am not at all happy with it's encoding. Truly Edius is the smoothest of all. I have never seen any other system do 4 or 5 streams of full 1920 x 1080p hd of ANY codec and edit them and apply effects at FULL quality, no quasi preview crap or chunkiness or blocks. The only thing is that Edius 6 is missing many needed plug ins, better color correction, and it's not compatible with the standard plugins but perhaps that is why it runs at light speed. Edius 6 to me now is the closest thing to what the video toaster used to be, if only they would open up the tool set some more. Also... why is Edius 6 not available on a Mac? I can run final cut pro on a mac installed on a PC box but I can NOT get Edius to work on a PC installed on a mac box.
Let me repeat that I am not attacking you on your choice - just explaining why I chose to work the way I do currently on Win 7.
I'm not a fanboy, I build my own computers out of what works the best from testing / my budget - not ads that say - "this is the best".
It is exactly that same spirit that got me so blown away by the hacked GH1 and now GH2, I actually went in there and played with it and when I finally got my 24p hack working at a high bitrate the images simply spoke for themselves. I was flabbergasted. Of course when I say 24p hack I mean my tinkering with the genius of vitali. The kitchen was closed, and he opened it with the key so you could use your own ingenuity and look at the stunning images that we have - images from these cheap cameras rival or beat the images of the entire Star Wars prequels which were shot on sony cine altas linked to hard drives costing quadrillions of dollars.... They look like crap on DVD (except for episode one where he still used some film) and just got released on blu-ray. Since they were shot at 1920 x 1080p and he did a lot of bad digital oversampling it's probably going to look like crap. Reveng of the Sith looks like it was made on an XBOX 360.
In a perfect world we would all be using Amigas. The multitasking OS was tight enough to put on a floppy. I mean this thing came out of the box singing and dancing and calling you names. I'd put the OS into the ram disk and that little 256k beastie was faster than the multicore, giga-ram monster I'm running now. If that stupid @#$% hadn't raided his own company cyber life would be so much better.
The Amiga was indeed well ahead of it's time, both in technology and corporate corruption. Well, technically, it wasn't the Amiga people who were corrupt, but a few at Commodore were corrupt enough for everyone. Shades of Enron.....
As for the TriCaster, I think NewTek is using it to position themselves in the middle-ground. It's certainly not cheap, that's for sure. I think the market has kinda shifted, however....a lot of the indie producers are taking more of a film-style approach to their work now, and NewTek has always been about TV. That market is changing, too ... and if I were Grass Valley, I would be worried.
Look at that and full screen it. I am editing and playing in Edius 6 with filters and color correction live in real time while also broadcasting and encoding LIVE in HD (only 720p) via livestream... I could NEVER do this on a mac. Period.
