Panasonic VariCam LT Specs Revealed

The FS7 isn't half the price. It's one third the price. The Sony FS5 is even less and pretty much just as good.

A wedding videographer told me of a father of the bride who kept rejecting videographers. He mailed him a brochure, with little hope. His prices were around $5,000. The father looked at the prices and said, "Finally, a professional," and booked him.

People look at the sticker price and can't help wanting to believe that there's something there if it costs more.

Again, I am all for spending a little extra for that little extra mile, but not thousands of dollars for that minor or even invisible mile.

Odyssey7Q+ to Support New Panasonic VariCam LT RAW Output

(Colorado Springs, CO - February 10, 2016) Convergent Design today announces that Odyssey monitor/recorders will support the Panasonic VariCam LT digital cinema camera's RAW file format. VariCam V-RAW is the newest format to be supported in Convergent Design's Odyssey RAW Bundle for Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+ monitor/recorders along with Canon Cinema RAW, Sony FS RAW, ARRIRAW and more. The Panasonic VariCam LT, announced today, will add RAW output in a firmware upgrade from Panasonic this summer.

"The Odyssey supports RAW from more cameras than any other device in the industry."said Mike Schell, President, Convergent Design. "The VariCam LT is a great camera and an important one in the Panasonic line, and we're proud to include it in the Odyssey RAW Bundle for the Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+. Odyssey will support all frame rates and resolutions available for output from the Varicam LT. In addition to our RAW record capabilities, we can integrate the Odyssey's Image Analysis Tools for focus, color and exposure, as well as its accurate OLED monitor and comprehensive Odyssey LUT System. Together the VariCam LT and the Odyssey make a complete professional image capture package."

I think it's good to see Panny back in the game and while a bit late... can't wait to see IQ from this camera.

Awesome! I want, next question is how long will I need to wait before it can come down to a price on the secondhand market that I can afford!! haha, maybe 3yrs + ?

The FS7 isn't half the price. It's one third the price.

To compare the price of the Panasonic Varicam LT to the Sony FS7 you have to also include the price of the Sony XDCA-FS7 extension unit along with the FS7 body, which brings the cost to $10,000. The Varicam LT already includes everything you have to pay extra for with the XDCA-FS7 extension unit (genlock, timecode, professional battery mount, ProRes recording, and raw output).

To compare two cameras, do you compare:

- exact numbers in specifications
- discernible output in image
- money made from

because you could spend a lot of money outfitting one camera to match another camera in one particular specification that doesn't, in the end, make much of a difference.

Anyway, even with the added accessory, shouldn't I buy the FS7?

It's not a camera for most of us but with it's dual iso and small form factor it will be a rental winner for specific shots. As for single operator fs7 is still the best choice. With speedbooster it's base is like 4000 iso so not far away from lt.

I think some people here overdivide the market. There are just two types of cameras to me, consumer and professional. There is not the DSLR market, the handicam market, the mid-priced shoulder market, and the high-end shoulder market.

For the consumer camera, the ideal is a smartphone. The consumer just wants to snap pictures. So they want a camera that does everything for them.
For the professional camera, the ideal is a DSLR without all the DSLR cripplements: good build, infinite record times, no aliasing, etc.
