Latest edition of HD Studio newsletter says ...

"Panasonic said it is addressing the significant backorders of its $6,000 AG-HVX200 camcorder and, with renewed factory support, hopes to fill new orders within 60 days. If you still can't get one by April, there will be about 30 P2/DVCPRO tape cameras at the booth."

Hope this is right, as I'm getting ready to order one I need by May 1.

That would be interesting....
Panasonic selling them from the booth.
That would really be impressive to see all these waiters lining up to buy this camera at a show.

What would the other vendors think?
Wouldn't this also sway others to buy this camera seeing a line of a hundred people waiting to pay $6,000 for camera and cards?

Nice publicity stunt.

I spoke with a Panny Broadcast rep yesterday... Seems that they're still plugging away on the cameras and their production will eventually catch up with demand in the next couple months... Essentially the same story we keep getting. As for the issue with P2 card supplies, it seems that they changed manufacturers/suppliers a few weeks ago and there has been some delays, but this was necessary to meet the new demands and to ensure that the 16GB cards are available as soon as possible. Essentially, they will be phasing out 4GB cards very soon and 16GB cards should be introduced at NAB and hopefully available to us end users hopefully sometime late summer to early fall, but if nothing else, by the end of the year.

I don't know how accurate all that is, but it seems like he knew what was going on.

Too bad they're planning on 'phasing out' the 4gb cards instead of just making them cheaper.
Makes sense financially I suppose - but kinda sucks for the buyers.

A buddy of mine has pre-arranged to buy 2 at cost, which will be used for a few days as demos on the show floor (but otherwise new).

They aren't putting the higher end cards out fast enough, in my opinion. Even the 16 Gig cards will be what? 22 minutes, in 1080? I know these things take time.

I'm looking at the Cineporter (especially if it has RAID 1) or Firestore. Maybe even a laptop with an extra battery installed.

Discontinuing 4Gb would be a really bad move. Obviously, that is all some people can afford.

Spec-Comm is in an even better position now though if they can get the Cineporter out soon. P2 cards will still serve a purpose but for most stuff the Cineporter will be all you need.

Unless they drop the price of the 8 Gb to what the 4 Gb were. Maybe when the 16 Gb comes out?

Exactly. I think the minimum buy-in price for P2 is going to be around $500 to $600 per card, it's just that the available capacities will increase every 6 to 8 months.

I think where Panasonic has really screwed up is that they had 4GB cards available and were just starting to ship 8GB cards and some people did get them. Then they suddenly changed manufacturers or whatever it is that actually happened and now there are no P2 cards to buy anywhere. The camera shortage is minor compared to this... Suddenly there are a few hundred HVX owners in the world and only 30 of them can actually record in HD. ...Not good.

So, for now, my HVX will sit here on my desk and mock me until some cards become available again. I need cards for a shoot this weekend and/or next week and I guess I will just rent. But rentals will get expensive, that's for sure...

I'll trade my XBOX 360 (base model package, extra controller, 3 games) + $150 for a 4GB P2 card. Any takers?

Wow, I can't believe I just typed that. ;)

We are not in the process of discontinuing the 4GB card. Sometimes I really wonder about the creative license people give to stories.

Jeff if you would ping me a private message with the name of the individual that told you this I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

jan

Well that's good to know that the 4GB cards aren't being phased out. I'll tell you what I do know via a PM. Hope I didn't get anyone in too much trouble. ;)

Anyway, I'm in a better mood... I found a couple 4GB P2 cards to go with my lonely HVX200. :) I'm wondering if I bought the last two in North America because I've called every dealer I can find a phone number for. Turns out Henry's in Canada had a couple and I bought their last two... I should have just bought the 4GB cards and a P2 store from Spec-Comm or EVS last week when they all had them in stock instead of holding out for the 8GB cards. Oh, well.

Thanks for that, Jan.
Good news - and I just thought it was worth reiterating so that no one missed it.

Good idea with the super-sized text. I'm feeling a little bit crummy now that I posted erroneous info.
