Panasonic S1H Announcement Tuesday, August 27th

The P4K / P6K are one inch wider than the S1H, which makes them a little tougher to balance on small gimbals.

That’s what it was. Because it is short, my pinky fully hangs off the side grip, but the camera is comparably wide, felt less secure. Not unworkable, just the feel of something bulky, that had a short grip.

Having held both the S1H and the BMPCC4K, I’d say they are comparable in size. The BM feels less secure, but almost equal the bulk.

Yes, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is wider, and the S1H is a bit taller and heavier, but overall they are pretty comparable.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K
  • Dimensions: 7 x 4 x 3.8 in. (178 x 101 x 96 mm)
  • Weight: 1.98 lb. (900 g)

Panasonic S1H
  • Dimensions: 5.9 x 4.5 x 4.3 in. (151 x 114 x 110 mm)
  • Weight: 2.32 lb. (1052 g)

The pocket “felt” bigger. Though, shorter.

The pocket had some quick access to video features. Thought that was nice. As far as ergonomics go, the S1H was more my preference though. Felt like an A9 meets D800, and then ugly panasonic styling we know and love them for (not).

I have a p4k and it's awesome and the huge screen is super nice but it would be nice if it tilted and the huge grip makes it a pain to balance in small gimbals (if you can get one that has the motors on the left, that's perfect; if not, you're going to need some counterweights).

Have you seen those tilt screen mods the the p4k? Pretty sweet looking.

Ok saw it in 4K, yeah not much difference in terms of resolution probably because it's shot on an anamorphic lens? I like the way it looks though.

Nicely shot, good lighting, and camera movement but to my eye, it looks like clean digital video, not "filmic" or "film-like". And that's not necessarily a bad thing, RED has proven that, I don't think REDs
look at all filmic, they have a different sort of very nice looking clean, detailed digital image. Biut I always come back to that outdated Arri sensor that was made to emulate 35mm stock as the standard look
that I think feels better and more interesting than anything else I have seen.

CVP just released a nice review video that includes a quick comparison between the SH1 and few of other cameras including the Pocket 6K and Sony Venice. The S1H looks to be a low light beast that to my eye looks great, and once ProRes RAW is available I think it will be a killer! The Pocket 6K did quite well in their testing but predictably lost out when shooting at higher ISOs.

I didn't realize the S1 and S1H could charge the internal battery through their USB-C port. With a couple of power bricks they were able to shoot all day.

Live cropping which looks like it could be really nice feature is discussed starting at about 13:00.

I am really starting to like this camera!

@Gary_T

Agreed. It has checked a lot of boxes.

Takes a lot of what is good about hybrids, and pushes even further into video.

Yeah you can get a small USB power brick that would last all day. I am probably getting an S1 soon, the price used is really inexpensive for what you are getting. No Vlog built in of course, but HEVC HLG should be decent too.

Hey you never know, you might get a used one with the VLOG installed. I wasn't that lucky but still ended up saving by getting a used one with the 24-105mm.

FYI In the zacuto / S1H series on youtube, forget which part (its multiple parts), Matt from Panasonic states they believe there is still a very viable market for M43 where the small and light package shines. And states that they are going to continue to aggressively develop their M43 offerings.

And yeah, I really love the idea of a GH6 version of the S1H!
