Panasonic requested firmware changes

Firmware and file structuring changes would be very desireable. Hope we don't have to wait for these in a HVX 200a or b varient.

My wish list would be to be able to split any video clip. This would be like Barry's trim idea, only at a simpler level. If I want the front end of a clip cut out, find the point, split, and delete the first clip. If I want to remove the tail end of a clip, find the point, split, and delete the second clip.

Another thing would be the use of subdirectories rather than partitions for the P2 Store Drive and dumping to any disk. A name for the subdirectory would be: VC000000, where VC = Video Clips and the "000000" increments by 1 for every new subdirectory generated. This would go from "000000" to "999999" before the numbers repeat giving 1,000,000 different subdirectory names. The camera would need to remember the name of the last subdirectory written, but this is a minor thing.

Another addition to that is to allow the user to define the second character in the name, "VC000000" could be anything from A --> Z. This would allow for multiple cameras to each have their own unique subdirectory name.

I agree on the files versus partition request for the P2Store. This is my primary workflow complaint with P2 at this time. I shot three to-the-brink full P2Stores this weekend and the only issue I had was in the 45 x 6 minute drag and drop procedures. For a crew of two, having to stop working entirely for 90 minutes to offload the Store is a real drag ('n drop) [sic].

I'm not sold on the idea of being able to split or otherwise edit within the camera itself, not because it shouldn't be done, but because I can't imagine a set where it would be practical. Get it in the can, mark your good takes in meta or on paper during the copy process and keep shooting.

I think the spilt idea would be wonderful. I have at least once per shoot where I would like to clip a clip and save the extra space for another shot. (This Saturday in particular was a pain.) I like Barry's loop scenario, too.

Count me in for a file-structure overhaul request, also.
 
ability to see the thumbnails through the component outputs like throught the compiste ones.


Great suggestions so far! On a hardware note, I'd like a better mike holder option or upgrade...

wrong camera for that.. thats a feature that I can see on something like the Varicam 2
 
Or, that's something that could probably be relatively easily added in a P2 Viewer type of application. Obviously not the one from Panasonic, but maybe a more full-featured third party application; it'd be pretty nifty to have an option for "build proxies" and have it automatically create some MPEG-4 proxy files and write them to the card's proxy directory. Would be excellent for archiving too...
 
i still don't understand why the camera can flip the image horizontally (the MIRROR function), but they didn't include a vertical flip.....seems easy enough, eh? (any engineers take apart their HVX yet?)
 
Looks like this thread is possibly dead, but if anyone's taking notes for Panasonic, this one just came up for me today.

When recording a live event in 720 30pn (recording mode), if you turn the camera off, the frame rate automatically resets to 24 frames when you turn it back on, which is undercranking and doesn't record sound. kind of annoying if you need to turn on the camera and record something quickly (in normal 30 fps, with sound)
 
If you have mad changes in the preset menus, then you need to save that to the internal user files. If you have not done this, you should spend a little time on this one. Very powerful, once you understand it. Take an hour or so saving files to the scene files and the user files. Big, very, very big.

One thing that would really be nice would be a "6 for 6" option in the variable frame rates. Seems ashame they went to 12 and didn't go on down to add a very usefull feature to the camera. I suppose you could make it happen in the interval mode but then it's not HD.
With that, is there a way to rig the exposure to allow longer times for the blurring of motion, especially lights?
 
Sorry, that's correct you can get it in 30p or 60p just not 24p or 24pn, but you have to use the Videocam mode and 1/15th shutter isn't long enough.

Modification: I have played with 8 for 8 and there might be enough exposure to do it. Just have to get it out into an interesting location for that and try it.
