Panasonic Product Strategy

We have seen some odd product decisions from Panasonic the past few years, and I think it's a shame.

There was the HPX3700 Varicam that had no over crank, with pricing that was 2x what it should have been(A year later cut in half, ditto HPX2700).

The AF100 that had an inferior image to the GH2. Then nothing else on the large sensor front except AF100A. No Super 35 sensor camera. Imagine if there had been a large sensor ENG form factor Varicam? Or just a $10-15K large sensor camera, instead of letting Canon and Sony have that market.

The 4K Varicam is close to $60K when it delivers in the fall. No global shutter. It's as if we're watching Sony from a few years ago delivering the F35 flop. And F65 flop. Why would somebody buy the 4K Varicam for this price(without RAW recording), when a Sony F55 can be had today for half the price? I see the 4K Varicam getting a drastic price cut in its future(if it's to have much of a future). Is Panasonic not looking at the landscape of affordable 4K cameras? Their own GH4 is amazing.

The AJ-PX70 has been released without supporting many frame rates and resolutions with the various codec options. This is not how Panasonic normally delivers a product. it finally has the menu control that Sony has been providing with their palmcorders for years.

Why no affordable USB 3.0 P2 card reader?

I really want want to see Panasonic get back into the position they should be in. I know they had set backs due to financial losses company wide and the earthquake/Tsunami in Japan, but so did Sony, and it hasn't slowed them down.

We bought seven Panasonic cameras in the past six years, but I fear this trend will not continue if we keep seeing missteps from Panasonic.

I'm equally mystified. But I'm mystified every year, by Panasonic, Sony, Canon, and JVC. Then every once in a while I'm pleasantly surprised. I can't offer any insight why except that large companies are breeding grounds for ineptitude. They do not reward risk-taking, they enourage mediocrity. For every groundbreaking product you will always find a bold and intelligent individual who fought tooth and nail to get it through.

Panasonic's broadcast division is not run by the same people that were there and brought us the first (tape) VariCam. It is being run by the management of the laptop division and it shows. Even the way that they distribute to dealers changed and went to the way consumer electronics are distributed(wholesale distributors between Panny and the dealers instead of directly).

I spoke with one of the lead engineers at NAB and the new Vari's still baffle me. I love the VariCam's that I currently own(a 27H and 2x 2700's), but the new one... It's a non-starter. No global shutter, fixed PL mount and only 120 fps on the s35 head. And at a probable price double that of an F55. AND it's still not a true ENG body(at least not the prototypes at NAB) Sony and Panasonic have switched places in the broadcast world. I want to like the camera, but according to what's on paper right now, it makes zero sense to buy it from where I'm sitting at this point in time.

Let's hope that the GH4 is the beginning of a new trend at Panasonic.
I would like to less and better products.

I would also like to see new support for their dealer network.
I see retailers pushing other products.
How do they expect an intelligent customer to choose their product with out "Hands On" experience?
