Panasonic press release: DVX200 user Dave Craig

Panasonic sends me press releases all the time, about who's using their products. I don't usually repost them here, but this one was interesting and involved an interesting-enough usage of the DVX200 that I figured folks might want to see it, especially those who are wondering about build quality and ruggedness. I don't have any firsthand knowledge of this info, like I said, this is a press release...

------------------------------------

NEWARK, NJ (July 6, 2016) -- Director/Director of Photography Dave Craig, principal of Dream to Screen Productions (Los Angeles, CA), has put his AG-DVX200 4K large-sensor handheld to extensive use for client Operation Lion Claws Military Simulation Series (OLCMSS), sponsor of the largest simulation aircraft battles in the country.

Craig describes these events as “three-day weekends where civilians and military, fathers, sons, daughters--just about anyone who wants to experience the closest thing to active duty without the concern of paying the ‘ultimate sacrifice’--are led into mock combat scenarios by retired military VIPs.”

“Our format is to do a profile on the AO (Area of Operation), with cinematic shots and drone aerials and tell a dual story about the location and the military simulation, capturing the action of the battles, getting interviews in the field, and intercutting this with narration about the history of the venue,” Craig said.

“In the field, there is no time to change a lens or get a second take. We’ve learned the DVX200 inside and out so that we can quickly manipulate focus, zoom, iris and ND filters while chasing subjects in and out of buildings without stopping, and hopefully without ‘getting shot’ ourselves. I have found myself knee deep in a swamp, caught in a thunderstorm, rolling down a ravine while holding the DVX200, and in spite of all that, this is one of the toughest cameras that I have ever used,” he added.

“The DVX200, incredibly robust, is the perfect hybrid cinema/ENG run-and-gun camera, meaning I can get an incredibly cinematic look in an environment in which I have no control over the action, subjects, lighting, anything!” Craig recounted. “The only thing I can control is the camera, and if I have to stop to change a lens, I’ve missed something. At the same time, I get almost all the benefits of using an interchangeable lens system because of the DVX200’s large sensor, built-in ND filters and the ability to use up to 6db negative gain to open the iris even more. Carrying the DVX is like carrying a bag of lenses all in one robust package.”

That's me!

That's me!

Ahhh cool! I was wondering where that was going to show up. Thanks for posting Barry! I'm in post on a couple new shows we're working on including ghost hunting at Pennhurst Asylum PA. with the DVX. Had a great opportunity to use the IR recording mode. Blown away by these images!! No ghosts yet..

Dave, Congrats! I checked out your site...cool...And I probably missed something but can you provide a link to a clip or sequence that you think best shows off your work with the DVX200?

In about 60 days we have a piece on Pennhurst Asylum coming out that was ALL DVX in UHD and the footage is mind blowing here in the studio. Not sure what it is going to look like compressed to 1080, we're trying to get our video hosting service to implement UHD and it may happen when it comes time to upload that project. I'll post links here as soon as it is up. I'm just blown away at the detail and quality this camera can capture. It took a little getting used to but we stuck it out and it was worth it.

I was interviewed by Panasonic for one of these press releases. I'm told that it will be out possibly this month or next.

I took the stance on how I feel the camera is the next logical step for someone that's been a DSLR shooter and how the DVX200 with its ability to display gain as ISO is just one of the many things that helps with that transition.

As usual, I kind of rambled so hopefully they were able to make something out of the information that I presented to them.

Awesome Mapper! Can't wait to see it! I love hearing how other people are using these cameras and reading their insights. There's so much that we can all learn from each other. Huge thank you to Barry for being so helpful and giving us all a place to share our experiences. Has anyone ever tried to put together a Dvxuser meet up? That would be fun!
