Panasonic plasma factory developed for 3D HDTV

The electronics giant Panasonic has completed the development of its brand new factory in Amagasaki, Japan.

This is now the company’s largest plant dedicated to the production of plasma screen technology. With new European laws governing the power output of the televisions, it can only be supposed that the products coming out of the factory will be greener than before.

But what is interesting is that although the factory is dedicated to plasma screen production, ranging from 50” to 150” displays, this technology is the same as that needed to produce 3D HDTV capable televisions and as such will put Panasonic right up there, ready to knock 3D Televisions out with little need for adjustments in the production process.

When fully operational, the plant will be able to produce around one million 50” plasma screen TVs.

I have to wonder if that Panasonic 3D concept camcorder I saw at NAB 2009 (mixed with this 3D HDTV news) means that Panasonic is really hedging on mass 3D entertainment?

Sound was seen as a gimmick when it was introduced as well. I'm not saying 3d is in the same realm as sound, but it could be an intersting tool.

At NAB 2009 they seemed to be all about 3D, thinking it was going to be the next major thing and they wanted to be positioned as a leader in it.

For their sake I hope they know what they're doing, because I still think 3D is as faddy as it was in the '50's... :D

Yeah, but that's a case of a feature that was on there that I didn't even know about when I bought it. I found out later, reading the manual... :)

I agree Barry, it seems "faddy" to me to. Its been pumped up latley as a ploy to get people back to the theaters in a itunes/netflix/on demand media world.

I really don't care about 3D for my home TV's but I know a lot of kids who are gamers that do, I'm not much of a gamer but I can see thier point.

3D is the next sticker to be on screen, after HD-ready, Full HD, 120Hz, turbo-stuff, motion-blahblah, and other marketing BS.
too bad because 3D is very interesting and easy to produce. The only difficult thing is to display it, and we were very close this time.
Would i be shooting a movie today, i would do it in 3D, even if it would be finally released only in 2D.

Well, I will say this about 3D -- with the glasses, meh. But without glasses, on a real 3D display, it's pretty darn awesome. The only 3D display without glasses I've seen was at NAB, running some video game, but it was really pretty fantastic. Very low-res, but when they have full 1080p 3D TV with no need for glasses, I think it'll catch on pretty big.

I've been saying this for a while but it really does seam like CES will have a huge emphasis on 3D anything. Both Sony and Panasonic is going to push 3D hard and speaking of Sony, they claim that the PS3 will be updated to support 3D gaming so you don't have to buy a new one although a lot of people will still have to buy a new TV to take advantage of it.

To me, it always seems a little hard on the eyes Hi-rez 3D without glasses would be cool for the occasional production. I still prefer the 2D depth of traditional filmmaking. We'll see what consumers decide over the next few years. :)

Unfortunately it is not that easy to shoot in 3D. Shooting in 3D isn't just done by adding a 2nd camera to it! To produce a movie in 3d is quite a bit more difficult than to shoot it in 2d, which makes it quite costly.
