Panasonic or Third Party Basic Software?

Subject spans several different threads (although much refers to earlier Steve D helpful thread) so hope it is ok to post new thread. Received HMC40 yesterday and as time permits in next few days will begin recording/downloading/viewing. I have read many posts regarding downloading/viewing and for these basic operations I wonder if I need third party software or will Panasonic downloads do a good job for following:

1. Using SD/USB adapter to download to computer do I need to download AVCCAM Viewer from Pansonic--is that needed to view the download on computer monitor? Steve D. post referred to downloading AVCCAM viewer. Do I need to buy ShotPut or other parity checking software to ensure data is downloaded correctly or does AVCCAM Viewer include parity checking-??? See following for what Pana says about AVCCAM viewer and it seems to cover most of these tasks:

- Copy and playback AVCHD data and BD-RE ver.3.0 data
- Copy AVCHD data to memory media
- Create and edit metadata (compatible with P2 metadata format)

and what is BD-RE ver.3.0 ???

Other posts have suggested downloading Splash, VLC Media Player as well as ShotPut--are they "better" (in eye of beholder I understand) more convenient vs AVCCAM viewer?

2. In Steve D thread it was asked why download using USB output from camcorder--would I be right in saying you would do that primarily if you have NLE software that can control HMC40 so you can log or digitize (Avid Liquid terminology) selected bits only--for instance I think Avid Media Composer (next thing I need to learn) will do that. Or is it generally easier to download to computer using HMC40 USB connection --is what comes out of HMC40 USB port already "converted" to some computer friendly or NLE friendly format?? Steve pointed out need to open LCD screen and select computer to download to computer from HMC40 USB port (re Panasonic tech support).

3. Panasonic offers two different software downloads which seem to be ones you hope you never have to use--AVCCAM Restorer and AVCCAM SD Card File Recovery. Are these necessary if one follows directions--don't turn off camcorder while SD card is active, etc. Would they be good to download just in case---there was a post on the PD150 forum about ordeal of recovering corrupted data--would these help with that?

By the way, B&H is now selling AG-HMC40 for $1565 vs the $1590 I paid only last Thursday in case someone is thinking of buying.

If you're using Windows 7, you'll be able to download & view clips without third party software. The free download, Windows Live Photo Gallery and Movie Maker will provide additional cataloging and basic editing of AVCHD files.

Mac, I believe, may require third party software.

Good luck.
