If you have any desire to offload from the camera via firewire or shoot to a hard drive solution such as a Firestore you will wish that firewire port was operational. You may not need it now but you may in the future.

ok but there is a hvx200 locally and its fully operational, for 3000.....with 2x32 gb p2 cards....with that said, which camcorder should i take....and if i cant get my hands on the used ex1...which is the better cam between the hvx200p, hmc150, or sony nx5u?

firewire has nothing to do with dv tape.
Well, unless the user has some other camera or deck as well, then firewire does have a lot to do with whether or not the user will be able to use that DV tape. So if the firewire doesn't work, and the user does want to use DV tape, there'll be an additional expense involved to find an alternative capture deck.

firewire is useless if i am recording on p2 cards isnt it?
Not at all. The camera can do several functions via firewire. You can capture DV tape from it, you can stream live video even in HD mode, you can connect the camera to a computer and offload the cards via firewire, and you can plug a hard disk directly into the camera and have the camera copy its contents onto that hard disk.

That sounds really, really, really cheap.

HMC150 is newer than the HVX200p, it has a half-stop more sensitivity and a cleaner image and a few more features, but also less features -- it doesn't record standard-def and it doesn't have variable frame rates. If you're getting an HVX200p with two 32gb cards for $3000... that's a pretty good deal.

Don't know about the NX5U.

would a hmc150 overal be a better buy for $2300 vs $3000 for the hvx200p? cause the fact that the hvx200p is older than the hvx200a, and the hvx200a has better low light, and better res.....

what do you think? by the way your like a legend with panasonic, u wrote all the training books didnt you?

EDIT:i found a local guy selling the hmc-150 for $2300.00

allow me to rephrase: the firewire port being non-functional, has nothing to do with your ability to shoot to dv tape. but firewire functionality provides several other valuable features (transferring from P2, capturing from dv tape, connecting to a firestore, or live to a computer, etc) that you very well may NEED regardless of what format you shoot or the media you shoot on.

sounds to me that you are considering several options. i say unless you have some deadline, DONT RUSH into buying and do some more homework. there are number of pluses and minuses to each of the cameras youve mentioned.

HVX200 with cards at $3000, or HMC150 at $2300? That's a tough choice, they're both steals. I guess the main thing is that you sound like you're new to this, so probably don't need the broadcast-compatible DVCPRO-HD/P2 format... I'd look very strongly at that $2300 HMC150...

the image on the hmc150 looks better than the hvx200p.....alot better....but the ex1 better than the others....

i have been looking for a hmc150 for the past two weeks between 2000-2500 but i can not find any ...

Here is yet another opinion: http://richardladkani.com/media/presse/Presse Sonstige/01_Kameravergleich.pdf

The final section, translated by Google:

The HVX201 is not impressive compared to the EX1. The LCD screen is very grainy and the images rushing relatively strong in dark environments. In addition, one must also take into account that the HVX201 records to P2 cards at a compression rate of 100 Mb/s, where the camera uses 60 GB per hour space. We therefore need almost four 16-GB P2 cards to get to an hour. The contrast in the EX1 takes only 16 GB per hour, only one quarter of the space. One arrives at 160 GB to 16 hours in full HD resolution, with the HVX 201 just two hours 40 minutes. An important consideration when one intends to turn away for a few weeks of civilization.

Overall, the Sony EX1 is notable for its noise-free image, native 1920x1080 resolution, the 60p frames for slow motion, light sensitivity and the extremely sharp LCD monitor. Overall, it wins from the HVX 201 into almost every respect. Only in one respect the Panasonic camera has his nose in front: It includes a MiniDV drive on which you can call in an emergency. But it is useless in the HD world.

The Sony HVR-Z7 is overall a good camera if you want to turn back to HDV tape, but it can not generate full-HD recording and has no useful function slow motion. But it is a very good alternative to EX1, if you want to give up in favor of memory cartridges. The Z7 has the advantage of interchangeable lenses. We have the ability to generate extremely "Teligen" HDV recording in good quality. But when one has no problem with memory cards, it makes sense to wait for the EX3. With this camera you get the higher quality of XDCam-EX codecs in combination with 2/3-inch HD lens and 60p slow motion.

Hmm, I thought the EX3 has a 1/2-inch sensor, just like the EX1.

It kind of blows the credibility of whomever wrote this if they think that the EX3 has 2/3" sensors.

Comparing the Sonys to the Panasonics is like comparing Apples and Oranges. The Sony EX1/EX3 are razor sharp, much cleaner, sucky codec and terrible ergonomics. The Panasonic HVX201/171 are much softer, noisier, better codec and overall, pretty decent ergonomics (171 is great, 201, a bit chunky but still better than the Sonys).

The OP should buy whichever brand has the look and features that are most important to them. I use both the EX1 and the 170 and owned a 200 so I have experience with all of these cameras. A talented filmmaker/videographer can make magic with any of them, they are all great, just depends on what is important to the OP.
