Panasonic HD

Re: Panasonic HD

Its hard to guess. But do you except Panasonic to come out with a DVXHD model? That would kill the SDX900 unless they turned it into the SDXHD as a camera that can't do different frame rates like the Varicam. It might be the same as the Sony HDV so that the consumer market will start buying more HD TV sets to tape kid's baseball games, birthdays, etc. no 24p, etc.

Re: Panasonic HD

Panasonic, I think, will begin to address the HD option as it becomes more relevant in the marketplace. Hell, most people are still using VHS. When HD screens come down in price, we'll see some movement. Until then, Panasonic doesn't have to do anything. I'd like to see them come out with a cam that is small like the DVX, has 4.2.2 aspect, removable lenses, and runs on 16 bit A/D. That would be sweet!

Re: Panasonic HD

It's just a balsa mock-up.

But it REALLY does look like my super 8mm camera! Sooooo cool!

I think that Panasonic cannot ignore what's going on with HDV.
Several NLEs can edit HDV (and other HD formats).

They have two choices for the very near futur:

1-or they release a HDV camcorder soon
2-or they release an affordable DVCProHD camcorder soon

if not, then they would excluse themself from the new wave.

They better at least annonce something soon because Sony (and maybe JVC) will take all the place in the low cost HD market.

They cannot sit back and wait...

but anyway, what do i know about it...
...and Panasonic is clearly the most innovative manufacturer for thr past 3 years.

I bet they are working very hard...

let's see...

Re: Panasonic HD

I don't care much for that design. Its kinda of hideous looking...I said the same thing about the XL-1 when that first came out too.

Re: Panasonic HD

wow. not this again. it is a bit weird but i love the idea it has no tape. it'll probably be too expensive to use.

Re: Panasonic HD

Don't like the sound of this;

Panasonic also only showed a prototype HD camcorder. The model on display was the same one which was shown at the National Association of Broadcasters, an HD camcorder recording MPEG2 to their P2 flash media format. Officials from Panasonic did not have much information about the camcorder but said it would be available some time in 2005.

I was hoping Panasonic would stear clear of the mpeg2 compression. Anyone know anything more about this?

Panasonic is looking to 1080p HD by 2008

by George Jarrett
Panasonic's strategy for the HD market - laid out for all to see in a paper authored by Joachim Reinhardt, the president and COO of Matsushita Electric Europe - is being driven by Europe's move to progressive production and the experience it has gained with the Varicam.
Keen to stress support for existing standards like 1080i as well, the company has announced support for the EBU's mooted 720p 50 standard that commences, in product terms, with the introduction of a VJ-type MPEG-2 HD camcorder in the middle of next year.
"That will be our first introduction, but further on into the realms of HD P2 you will see camcorders that are switchable between 720p 50 and 1080i, and then further on again you will see us supporting an even higher level of production tools in terms of HD DD5 quality. That camcorder will be 1080p," said Robert Pascher, Panasonic's manager of European broadcast marketing.
At IBC Panasonic has launched the AJ-HDX-400E, the first 1080i/25p switchable camcorder. This sits next to the Varicam, rather than above it, which is what the market expected.
"We are now considering hi def migration with P2, based on the HD DD5 quality level from 2008 onwards," said Pascher. "However, at this show we are concentrating on our market launch of DVCPRO P2 series in SD. It will be roughly 2006 before we introduce the first HD versions of P2, but first designs for the HD MPEG-2 camcorder for video journalists can be seen on our stand."

Re: Panasonic HD

1080p....ouch ! :o

but they better come out soon with sometihing HD before Sony or JVC establish themself as the new low cost HD standard (HDV).

Re: Panasonic HD

It was about 2 years ago when i went to United Audio and Video (now Tweeter) and had my dad telling me about High Definition TV. There were a few samples, all HDNet channels, (that was all they had back then) And it looked amazing. I was blown away by how REAL and LIFELIKE the images were, mostly of nature. So why **** HDTV and high definition in general?

The formats used in HDTV are:
• 720p - 1280x720 pixels progressive
• 1080i - 1920x1080 pixels interlaced
• 1080p - 1920x1080 pixels progressive

Nice, If you're watching sports and getting fat with your friends at the age of 30 while your wife fixes chips and drinks in the kitchen for you and your buddy, secretly sneaking out at night meeting up with Roco to bone on the couch you paid for to watch the Superbowl with your buddies on. But wait; "1080i - 1920x1080 pixels interlaced". Wasn't HD supposed to be the next generation? and we still have INTERLACED?! Ok, i understand people might have older televisions.. but... huh? the government mandated all channels to broadcast in HD by a certain year AND all the televisions sold to be HD in the coming future... WHY ARE WE STILL USING INTERLACED?

People also make the point that HDTV can do 16x9 as well as 4x3. To stupid pricks who work as lawyers and want to buy a big screen TV and follow what their sales rep says as the bible, sure, thats cool. Heres a ****ing clue, ANYHING CAN BE SHOWN IN 16X9. Almost every hollywood movie is shot on film in 16x9. It is then shown in its original format by letterboxing it, which looks way awesome. The problem is when stupid broadcasters format it to fit your television (cut off 33% of the picture.) So why not just save billions and letterbox movies?

Broadcasting stations will have to spend THOUSANDS if not MILLIONS to upgrade ALL OF THEIR EQUIPMENT to HD because of the govt. mandate. This WILL run some stations out of business. Who gives a ****, TV sucks anyway.

FILM.

Think about it, movies allow us to "Suspend our disbelief," because of its picture is warmer and maybe grainier, so we know the world we are entering is not real. It is also fed through the camera/projector at 24 frames per second. Compared to HD, right now, most of HD is fed at 30 frames per second, making the image flatter and uglier. (Think video vs. 24fps.) High Definition is simply, too real. It abandons the film look. I wish i could meet the people who thought it would be nice to bring HD and digital video into hollywood, so I could beat the **** out of them. So why am I shooting video (at 24p mind you,) simple; im broke. These bigshots have millions and chose to spend it on digital/HD? we're abandoning our roots here.

thank you for listening to my rant.

What the hell are you talking about? ???

Re: Panasonic HD

The government has NOT mandated anyone or any company to do *anything* related to HD.

The government has set a date (end of 2006) by which broadcasters are to have switched over to DIGITAL broadcasting, but there's nothing about high-definition that's required. If a station broadcasts standard-def video digitally, they will be in full compliance.

Re: Panasonic HD

i was pretty sure that all televisions sold have to be hd enabled and local channels have to broadcast in hd.

Re: Panasonic HD

Nope. DTV. The ATSC has specified 18 formats of digital television, and some of them are HDTV, and some are SDTV. But a broadcaster only has to broadcast digitally, it has nothing to do with whether it's high-def or not.

The so-called reasoning behind it is that the digital signal takes up a lot less frequency space to broadcast, so broadcasters can shrink from the massive analog frequency spectrum down to a tight digital spectrum, and that will free up a lot of space in the public airwaves that the FCC could then re-sell to other broadcasters. So it's all about frequency space (and lobbying by TV set manufacturers) and has nothing to do with whether the broadcast is high-def or not.

Re: Panasonic HD

whether or not its hd, i work at my high schools tv department. since we're public access, we dont have to comply with this, but if we did, and had to convert everything to digital, we wouldnt have a tv station, we'd have to win the lottery.

Re: Panasonic HD

Exactly, which is why there's so much complaining from every sector. The smaller broadcasters are furious, the little independent UHF stations can't afford to convert, etc...

... and like I say, just wait until Joe and Jane Public find out that every TV set they own will stop working Dec. 31, 2006. There's going to be an ugly scene, guaranteed.
