Panasonic HC-X1000 4K Camera for $3500

interested to see how it compares to the ac160? If you mostly work in 1080, and don't have clients ready for 4k yet, what would be the best buying choice. Sure would be nice to have 4k to play around with though.
Do you think this is Panasonics only pro camera this year, or is there a hope of an new release of the 130/160?

The AC160 is a somewhat different beast and it has some things that the new HC-X1000 doesn't have (such as variable frame rates and an SDI output and waveform monitor, among others). And the AC160 is much bigger.

The HC-X1000 is a lot smaller, has a much longer zoom range, does 4K, and does many of the same things that the AC160 does, but not all of them. AC160 should likely be more sensitive in lower light scenarios. The HC-X1000 can be controlled remotely through wi-fi via an app on your phone. They're different. The HC-X1000 has the five-axis super-image-stabilization from the AC90 in it (when shooting HD, but not when shooting 4K) and is supposed to have much faster and more accurate autofocus. I haven't tested that so I can't say.

The AC160 is, generally, the more full-featured camera. But it's a lot bigger. A lot. The HC-X1000 isn't tiny, it's about the size of a DVX100, a little smaller than the AC90. It has some newer features, but doesn't have everything the AC160 does.

I am soooo glad I picked a camera (AG-AC160A).

It took a year but at the end it seemed to be the best option, given my needs and what was out there at the time.

I am not a mechanical engineer but it seems to me that the risk of hand-held overshoot when going from motion to stationary is less with a heavier, but not too heavy, camera.

Having said, that, I suspect you might get a jerk when you start to move the camera from a stationary position.

The bottom line, probably is you get used to the weight and with 5-axis stabilization, it may be noone needs to worry about movement.

I hope people who are buying 4K know they are likely to have to get a lot more horsepower for editing. I find that HD takes way longer than I would like it.

Very Good Points. The 4k files are huge. I love to play with it, but for clients, most are still using DVD or just web ready content like youtube. And they really don't care if it is 720 or 1080, as long as it looks and sounds good. But for us tech video guys, it is really beautiful to look at and gives more property to edit from.
I remember you "kwkeirstead "when you bought your 160, and I think you and I would like to see a new version to this camera with a little better Autofocus.
I returned my 130 and i am on the fence of either buying a 160 or wait a little longer to see what comes out this fall and spring.

@Deer Film..

After 500 hours on the 160, I would today put more value a 5-axis OIS, then auto-focus (I would only use this for sports events).

Since the 160 has been around for 3 + years now, one would expect to find deals - its still a great camera.

I wish I had more DOF control but that would mean going to a cam with interchangeable lenses.

I am unlikely to go to any new camera.

My priorities for add-ons include a streaming video transmitter, a horizonal/vertical slider, a Datavision Interviewer 3-light kit and I suppose, at some stage, a quadcopter. Soon as I get a few more contracts, I will get an audio compressor and a copy of Plural Eyes.

It's quite limiting to have only 1 camera - adding another operator is out of the question but I could just set up a 2nd cam and let it run. Having two cams in my view makes for much more interesting recordings.

low light dog?

low light dog?

Wow! It may be time to bump it up to 4k...

This won't be a cam for weddings if it's not good in low light. You're going to have to wait a few generations, or get a Sony A7S. I wonder what JVC has up its sleeve.

The Panasonic HC-X1000 will be the next step for me. I had too much issues with DSLR. This would the perfect camera for most of my project : news, broadcast, ads, portrait, documentaries. I hope that their will be an update wireframe when the H265 will go out there!

I am cautiously optimistic about this camera, right now I use a combination of AC-160’s with HMC-150’s for live events but I am kind of tired of their look and troubles with the 160’s autofocus at darker events. It seemed like from the BH Video for HC-X1000 that it will have the same sensor as the GH4 which to me would mean that it has 10bit color vs the 8bit on the AC-160, plus if you are shooting in 4k and downresing to 1080 you will get the advantages of recomposing shots in post as well as the incredible sharpness of the GH4.
If you aren’t familiar with the downresing advantages check out Dave Dugdale’s GH4 reviews on YouTube. It would also be nice to use a GH4 as a center camera or master shot in combination with the HC-X1000 in multi-camera shoots.
As a side note Panasonic should really do something about low light in their camera’s they seem to be falling behind other companies in the technology, it would be a deal breaker if HC-X1000 stinks in low light.

It doesn't have the same sensor as the GH4. It appears to use the same processing engine as the GH4 (well, two of the processing engines that are in the GH4) but the sensor is a different, smaller unit than the GH4's sensor.

Nah. I'll pass on this one. As usual, Japanese companies give you 80% of what you need in one camera and 20% in another. Clever. Remember ED Beta?

Price dropped to $2800 for the x1000, very affordable 4k and many nice features. A s35mm version would be very welcomed.
