GH4 Panasonic GH4 Gets HDMI Timecode Out. Will Trigger External Records

Looks like Panasonic is giving the GH4 a LOG profile. Interesting. Could be tough on the codec but cant wait to bend it and see when it breaks!

  • With this firmware, time code and RSS(Recording Start/Stop) signal can be embedded to the HDMI output signal*.* Available when DMC-GH4 or DMW-YAGH are connected with the products of Atomos Global Pty. Ltd. or the products complying with the extended specifications of Atomos Global Pty. Ltd..
  • FHD at 30p/25p native output via HDMI is available while recording video in FHD at 30p/25p.
  • FHD at 30PsF(Over 60i) / 25PsF(Over 50i) output via SDI is available while recording video in FHD at 30p/25p.* When DMW-YAGH is used for SDI output.

If the v log is true one might speculate why is it not part of this release.
1. It's a hoax
2. Panasonic needs to do more work on the in camera codec
3. It will be only available coming out of the the HDMI port or the yagh sdi port, and we have to wait for the release of the shogun.

Honestly, something like v log is only interesting if it can eek more out of the sensor than current profiles do. If it results in a "flatness" that maintains high levels of noise in the shadows and doesn't improve the harsh clipping of the highlights, not much point. We've already learned in the early days that all -5 and cranking the shadows and highlights results in a lot of ugliness. Even in shooting with a conservative -2, -5, -2, -5 and not raising shadows, I'm getting quite a bit of shadow noise in wide dynamic range, low iso shots when I protect the highlights.

Perhaps a different codec can access more range from the sensor... Would be grand.

I think and this is only me talking that if this V-Log does come to the GH4 it has to be different than just a flat profile. I have no idea what Panasonic will do but you just cant add a LOG mode without tweaking the color science of the camera. It could result in a overall better looking image and possibly a better codec option. It could also only be for external use with 4:2:2 out in 4K? Im just throwing darts here.

Canon did a firmware update to the C300 that changed the color science and wow did it change the color.

Thanks Erik!

Odd the support page doesn't address 24p, but the photo of the LCD appears to show V-Log available in UHD 24p.

They're still testing it, apparently.

Newshooter.com Matthew Allard went over to Panasonic to check it out. It's beta right now but installed and showing in the booth. I hope Panasonic changes the color science to get the most out of V-LOG and not just make it a preset with existing functions that already exists in the GH4. We know that the curves as is turns the image to mush. A LOG profile when using the Shogun in 10 bit 4:2:2 via HDMI out is a very exciting idea.

Now that it seems V-Log is not coming with this firmware I'm even more concerned that's there no mention of 24p being supported by the HDMI update.
