Panasonic GH3 Debut Viideo

I'll take that wager. Right now GH2's a good 9 stops, AF100's 10. I bet that it's 10~11 usable. Well, maybe hacked or HDMI recorded out, anyway.

I don't know if everybody is not going a bit overboard about the gh2 dynamic range. Every-time I saw comparison between the Af100 and gh2, the gh2 came on top in term of DR, like on this threat http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?270459-AF100-with-a-hacked-GH2/page5 . I have also done some test between a hacked gh2 and cinestyle 7d here http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1795/dynamic-range-test-between-gh2-and-7d/p1. I can tell that they are not far at all when you take into account the amount of DR in the shadows. If you take into account detail, I would say the gh2 is even better. Now my test was done with a very old hack and they have improved a lot about shadow detail.

Another example here to illustrate the gh2 dynamic range http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPHIEU1X1Bo . If you have any experience working with the latest Sony exmor sensor like the Nikon D800 14.5 stop of DR is mostly in the shadows. You see pitch black images that come out of life with color information with a curve. Now I am not saying that the gh2 has the same type of DR, but I think people are exaggerating a bit.

That's what I'm hoping for, too. Exposing on the highlights and pulling back the shadows in post.

Well, there are actual tests out there and I believe Barry did one for the GH2 and AF100 showing that the Af100 definitely had one stop over the GH2 at 10. Those are the kinds of tests I go by, where you can clearly see where usable stops are. GH2 is definitely not in the FS100 range, and FS100 is 10.5~11.

One stop isn't a small step, that's a pretty noticeable difference between images. Just because FS100 can grab 11 and C300 gets 12 doesn't put it in the C300's range. 12 stops is 12 stops.

"Only" 10.5-11 stops for the FS100? In the Zakuto shootout with equal lightning the FS100 came out quite close to the C300 while the GH2 clearly showed its shortcomings. So 10.5-11 stops would be enough to make the GH3 a gamechanger IMO. I already like the highlight rolloff, didn't see that yellowish clipping of the GH2 and AF100.

Lighting changes a lot of things, but yeah it's "only" to me because that's Original RED territory... and, I'm looking for advancements. For a lot of people it will be plenty, though. Still plenty usable.

Some more rumors from 43 rumors extracted from a video interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6were7Wt0mQ&list=UUvaW_nF1V306QHq6T6NXPMQ

The video is not really filled with information, anyway, if you want to watch it an save some time I recommend to start at about 00:21.

  • The GH3 “unofficially” has uncompressed video out. Meaning while its a hardware feature its not one that will be advertised by Panasonic.
  • The GH3 has multi aspect ratio sensor! But don’t get too excited as the multi aspect function is disabled in the original firmware.
  • WiFi mode will allow wireless monitoring of video or stills with a tablet or smart phone.
  • WiFi mode will transfer either raw or jpegs to a tablet or smart phone but if you shoot raw+jpeg you can’t just transfer jpegs, you must transfer both.
  • WiFi mode can automatically upload jpegs to social media.
UPDATE: Uematsu confirmed at Techradar that “focus peaking could be added with a firmware upgrade“.

Someone really needs to make this clear. The GH2 has "clean" (no status overlays) and "uncompressed" video out of its HDMI port as well. The problem, is, as Barry Green stated in another thread:

The GH2's HDMI output is awful. It's inaccurate in color, it's wildly off when you're in pause mode (it's much more accurate when you're recording, but only when you're recording), and it doesn't output 4:2:2 or even a clean 4:2:0, it has a "broken" 4:2:0 output. Plus its cadence is wrong, it doesn't output the video standard of 59.94i, it outputs 60.00i, so there's a duplicated field repeated every 17th field.

So until someone can actually plug the GH3 into a recorder and see if the output of the HDMI port results in a good recordable signal, you're not going to know one way or the other. My guess is that the GH3, like the GH2, will not be suitable for external recording.

I want clean HDMI out in a Camera but not for Recording....I need it for a Live Event Scenario.

I know somepople would probably say that what the GH2 does is suited qualitywise for what I want but I would hope the GH3 has the best quality you can get....after all isn't that what updates to anything is supposed to be for....improving on features (before you say it too....I know the other is making lots of dosh).

If it has great HDMI out I will be getting one to use alongside my 5D3.

towards the end there's *moire*in the mans shirt in the distance. other than that sharpness looks pretty darn good to me. DR not so good although the harsh directional overhead lights on some of these scenes are rough. downloaded this and overall pretty good id say.

Panasonic Consumer's marketing department needs to get the GH3 into talented cinematographer's hands as soon as practical to show what the camera is truly capable of in various applications.

Enough of the bloggers already! Bring on the pros.

I thought the image of Genesis was sufficient as the story was, well...... But Andrews little post did nothing for me. He states that he graded with some dude from apple? I would have rather seen native footage if that is called a grade! I'd love to see Shane Hurlbut or Rodney Charters hit this camera.
Saw some nastiness in EOSboy's video at end of the mans shirt. Looks like some aliasing issues to me.

Geez, give the EOSHD guy a break! He was at a stupid trade show. It's not like he could leave with the camera, setup a crew/cast/locations and shoot a short with it in a few hours.

A good cinematographer with a good crew / lighting package and budget for production design will make ANY modern video camera look good. So I'm not sure what the point is, to give the camera to a great cinematographer. Give a camera to a great cinematographer, to make it look good. OK, but that won't show as much about the camera as you would think. Because any good shooter knows how to light and shoot within the limitations to make something look really nice.
