Panasonic GH3 Debut Viideo

Razz...re dr...care for a friendly wager? Compared to a hacked GH2, I don't see more than a half stop improvement.
You've seen 2 videos from the Gh3. Videos made with a crippled Gh3. One of the videos was said to have been graded with crushed low values (Genesis) and the other is just run and gun everyday tourist shots. You've seen both compressed. And you willing to make bets against a camera with less than 10 stops DR?
On top of that, you're asking for the world out of a $1300 camera that has stills photography as it's main feature????!!!!????

Oh boy.

The dr on a D7000 is nice, the dr on a Gh2 is not. The D7000 is not "the world". I'd upgrade for that sort of increase.

You think 11.5 stops? Really? C300 ballpark? 1 1/2 stops from the BMCC?

I'll take that wager. Right now GH2's a good 9 stops, AF100's 10. I bet that it's 10~11 usable. Well, maybe hacked or HDMI recorded out, anyway.

From the 2 videos I've seen I'd say it's probably on par with the MKII and MKIII so yeah 10-11 stops. The ALL-I looks pretty solid in the 1080p Genesis vimeo download, I suspect that it's CBR unlike the MKIII which is VBR and drops to the low 30s at times.
1600 ISO looks really clean and there's no banding :2vrolijk_08:And I didn't see any aliasing or moire in Genesis, there was some in the cat vid but I suspect the sharpness was up. It's worth getting one just for the 1080p 60p. I just hope it has some kind of flat profile for grading.

The GH3 has what they call Creative Control settings. One of them is named High Dynamic and looks quite flat.
( http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh3/still_shooting.html) Maybe starting from that setting and dialing in more personalized leves (in the illustration it looks oversaturated - but it's only an illustration) one might get a nice profile.

The way the highlights roll off is similar now how they do with the 5D. Which is great, no more clipping! Something that always put me off watching GH2 footage. The 5D, with the Flaat picture profiles reaches 11.5 stops. So yes, there is hope.

Probably out of the box standard settings. Seems you will be able to dial sharpness and contrast ways down.

I also suspect slightly underexposing and bringing up the shadows in post will help saving the highlights of GH3 footage. If it's really that clean you don't risk getting too much noise doing so.

The GH2 also has those Creative Control settings, but doesn't include that "High Dynamic" option. IF this is a near-log profile that brings to the H.264 decoder all the DR that the sensor is capturing, it will be a very welcome feature, the one I'd be looking forward the most on the GH3 (because then, even if DR in RAW stills is not improved, DR in video would be considerably better).

Though in the specs the Creative Video Mode is listed below the Creative Control this doesn't mean they exclude each other. Those Creative Controls listed for motion images should be available in the Creative Video Mode, too. (Correct me if with the GH2 it was different)

I've read that on the GH3 you can put contrast at -5 instead of only -2 like on the GH1 and Gh2.

How long have you been waiting to use this gem? lol. I'm thinking the -5 setting will make a noticeable difference for achieving a flatter picture style than the -2 did. An intentionally crippled setting in the GH2, I assume. Still, I sure wish Panasonic would allow custom curves like the Canon's. Would love to use Technicolor Cinestyle type of curve on the GH3.

The GH2 sensor was 19mm wide, a standard m43 sensor would be 17.3mm wide, the one in the BMC is 15.8mm wide.

Did a fast not scientific comparison between the sensors of GH2 and GH3 in Photoshop (measuring the sensors in the photo above):

Oh, oh, GH3 said to have only 4:2:0 HDMI-out.

And no multi aspect sensor, seems to be significantly smaller for 16:9 video:

Yesterday's announcement of the GH3 left some room for interpretation with respect to others. the signal processing. At Photokina, could now be on the Panasonic booth to find out that internally with 4:2:0 / 8 Bit selbiges signal is received and also to HDMI present (no 4:2:2 externally as hoped). Likewise confirmed Panasonic employees to assume that the new features in contrast to GH3 GH2 does not have a multi-format (Multi Aspect Ratio) sensor.

Based on what? Your image seems to grossly exaggerate a difference of 1.7mm.

Hi Garry, I edited my post above to make clear that it was not scientific what I did. The GH2 sensor ist by a factor of 1,1 bigger than the standard sensor, based on Samuel's numbers. My measurement was even a bit more in favor of the GH3, in the graph above the GH2's sensor ist only bigger by a factor of 1,075. But it was just done fast and dirty copying the sensors out of the comparison photo. (of course you must compare the black and the red rectangle. The white one is the background)
