Panasonic GH3 Debut Viideo

I've been under an NDA for awhile, but that's over know. Nothing much to add, except that Panasonic Consumer clearly sees the GH3 has their top-of-line camera, & I'm not surprised they're not offering an non-HD lens package.

Really glad they implemented the smartphone integration. They were leaning towards PC, or Mac, but we argued against.

Neither have I seen anything official regarding the suggested retail price. So far, I've heard people quote a MSRP here in the USA from as low as $1,300 to as high as $1,700

I see two different major online stores with list price at $1299... that's probably a good starting point.

You mean they wanted us to lug a laptop around to control those functions? If so, thank you for setting them straight!!!

I really don't know a lot about the GH series, but have been shooting a 7D for a while and this seems like a pretty nice camera. Has a lot of features and a great price. Not sure how the sensor and low light compare to the 7D (other than crop factor), but I can't find much to complain about. I was concerned about the small size for photography (big hands :)), but the grip will fix that. How would it compare to a 7D on the stills side?

Don't know yet until we see more examples and reviews from photog sites. The GH series have more of a video camera feel to them than a photo camera feel. Which to some can make it feel "cheap" when shooting photos, but great when shooting video.

I don't see a 3.5mm mic input anywhere? Does this not have one?

http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh3/video_expandability.html

3.5mm mic jack, & 3.5mm headphone jack. non-grip side of the camera

remote on the grip side of the camera (remote & mic shared a 2/5mm jack on the GH2)

Anyone know if the HDMI is limited in any way? Could we a nice have 4:2:2 8bit? Or at least HDMI live view in all modes, so we can use a monitor / EVF even when in 720p60 or ETC?

That's exactly what they were thinking, & smartphones/tablets were not a consideration.

Sometimes I wonder about the Japanese, if they are living in their own little world and just don't have the same concepts or workflows as people in the west. It's the only thing I can think of to explain some of the silly choices I've seen them make with camera designs in the past. At least Panasonic decided to listen. Thankfully so.

But I do wish there were more American camera companies. An American camera company would never release a video camera without a headphone and mic jack even on their lowest model.

This is true... I remember talking with the Canopus engineers about Edius back in the day.. They originally had all the mouse wheel movements the opposite... so scrolling up would decrease the numbers and vice versa. It took a while to get them to change what everyone assumed would be a standard feature.

Gotta see some non-compressed clips from the camera. Cat footage was not very inspiring to me, but the specs are still pretty darned good for the price. =T

I actually got more from the cat footage than genesis because it wasn't graded. But I've no idea about sharpness settings or profiles. These days I generally don't try to do any evaluations on post compressed web videos but the ALL-I codec looked pretty clean. I see more aliasing and moire than the MKIII but of-course the GH3 is resolving more. 60p 1080p is a great addition and it could be worth getting one just for that.

The DR seems significantly improved on the GH3. It shows up in a smoother better defined tonal scale and better deep shadow detail. Motion quality unhacked is definitely better. The GH2 had this kind of ghostlike transparent quality to motion that I don't see on this one. All around seems like a significant step forward. Lot of camera for the money.
I still want a raw motion camera, but might put that off for a bit for one of these as it would be more practical for shooting Suzy's art demo videos and the stills quality looks to be better than her current 10MP Nikon D40x too. Double bang upgrade for the D40x and my GL2 for not a lot of bucks.

Razz...re dr...care for a friendly wager? Compared to a hacked GH2, I don't see more than a half stop improvement.

Panasonic is offering the GH3 body only, or packaged with either the 12-35, or 14-140.

Wish the had a package deal on the 35-100 as lots of us already own the other lenses.

Any idea on when the 12-35 kit will be announced or how much it will run? This would be perfect as I own an AF100 as well and had good results with the 12-35 on a recent shoot.

I'll take that wager. Right now GH2's a good 9 stops, AF100's 10. I bet that it's 10~11 usable. Well, maybe hacked or HDMI recorded out, anyway.

Now we just have to define "significant" :)

But seriously, I'd jump at a 2 stop improvement...just not seeing it.

Here's to hoping that you're right Kholi! :)

I'm thinking that a GH3/BMC combo is looking pretty sweet right? Share glass (for crop size) and hopefully when the BMC gets active M43 mount.....better lowlight from GH3 (likely)...better DR from BMC. No moire from GH3, ....super sharp from BMC. Smaller file size from GH3....more gradability from the BMC. Very nice combo I reckon'. NICE....
