GH2 Panasonic GH2 vk hack with kae patch

No offense but that first video really should be taken down by now. I understand you are learning but some of us need to work lol. I actually had a client come back to me with that video and ask me if this is the new hack? i'm like noooooooooooooooooooo!! my stuff will NEVER look like that. You'll make better stuff i promise! so stop holding on to that one, giving gh2 a bad name, cannon competition is bad enough already.

did you see the last video? what are your thoughts on that? is it giving it a bad name??? are you in the film industry? what kind of work do you do?

I would have a question for you. What are you trying to show with the tests? This is a question you should be asking yourself constantly, maybe you should also write a small paragraph under your video to explain what we are looking at in the image (is it background noise, is it contrast, is it color lighting, motion...). The quality tests you are trying to reproduce are only good with a comparison. Like, is it better, worse or the same. Also only change one parameter at a time. If you are testing the ISO, do simple short clips of the same action for each ISO. You are trying the GOP, do a short clip with different GOP while keeping all the other settings to the same value. I would also advise to use a controlled lighting environment for testing so the light doesn't changes an so the image stays the same with the same settings over time. If you shoot one during the day then the second test 5 hours later. The light will have changed, the continuity is broken. Also try to use subjects that will show what you are working on, If you research on low light, do a candle lit test, if yo work on focus, take a focus chart and pin it to the wall if yo work on rack focus put two objects at different positions, if you work on image definition (like with nitrate and GOP) use a very contrasty/detailed subject like a bush with a lot of leaves, etc...

I went to film school, and we were also working on film. I worked on Aaton cameras before digital and this is not an excuse. Film is so much harder than video that you should be able to know the video basics by now. If you are not planning on becoming a DP or a camera op, ask one of your friends at school to help you. That's what film school is all about connect with kids your age and discover things together. When I was there, I would take a camera, and test things out with my friends look at the result with them and discuss it together first.

I am not trying to be mean or to take you down, we all came from there, learning filmmaking is a steep path. Good luck.

I am a director of photography work the camera / cinematography and i also often edit too. I work with my GH2 a lot or with RED cameras. I was not bashing you for the fun of it, i was saying you can get a much better image out of the camera. If we tell you there is a learning curve and you are not there yet, don't take it offensively, its a fact. And that first video really was not there yet. You will eventually master in camera and post and realize yea.... just buying the camera doesn't ensure good filming, you do that. When i said you give the hack a bad name with a bad example i'm sorry but its true. I get straight up film quality from it, nothing like what you posted and i do so consistently, i would never make rent with footage like that.

Kae was doing decent work with his patches back then but you should seriously consider the INTRA patches, they look beautiful. here is a sample clip http://osgfilms.com/gh2-driftwood-patches i did when i first started testing the new driftwood pathces. Its been so long since my reply to you that my words may be irrelevant now and you have mastered the gh2 at this point. Show me something you did recently and use vimeo if you can, there are compression artifacts in the youtube examples that are kinda ruining it too.

These GH2's with driftwood are really starting to grow on me. They don't exhibit the same amount of artifacts as Canon gen1 dslr's. It will be interesting to get my hands on one. Hopefully the controls are as easy and fast as a 60D or better.

The nikon D7000 has a nice enough image, and is a decent in video mode, just some settings are harder on the fly to control, or take 2 hands, which kind of kills it for speed. And my shooting style requires fast response to situations.

It's probably already too late to make recommendations for the GH3, but if not: Make it easy for one hand settings changing. Menu navigation, ISO, shutter speed, focus zoom, WB, all have to be reached by the right hand only operation. and if audio can be too control on the right side, that would be nice too, but not mandatory, instant access to audio is more important than what side it is controlled on.

But anyway, this hack is is helping.
