Panasonic GH2 Discoveries (Luminous-Landscape)

mmm.. hardly any real negative points. the interesting part was the gamma curve, i wish they could expand on their settings a bit.

From the article:

To make shooting video simple manufacturers typically provide a separate red video button. Press it at any time and you're shooting video. Convenient to be sure. But, all settings are automated in this mode; fine for casual use and the amateur, but not for the serious user. Too many compromises in image quality.

Is this true? Does using the dedicated video button disregard custom video settings?

couple of things I found surprising...

1) No focus assist for manual lenses during recording, only prior to pushing record
2) No focus assist on HDMI. So if anyone is planning on using an EVF etc., unless the EVF offers 1:1 pixel, there will not be any way to magnify the focus area

No, only if you're not in Manual movie mode. If you're on any of the non-movie dial modes, pressing that button will engage their auto movie (1080i) mode, but if you've put your camera on the Movie mode dial, then pushing that button will just start recording with the settings you've set.

Good info on the manual lens option cause shooting with the voigtlander on the GH2 does take some work... but it looks glorious... I think the GH2 will become a lot more sought after and acknowledged within the industry and not just among the dieharders.... The af100 has something to do with that too and also now the 7D and 5D are getting some flack for some of it's foibles...

Can someone enlighten me, please? I went through the whole menu system, but I can't find the gamma curve settings M.R. is referring to.

i don't think there's much options.. he means the general cine mode (smooth, cinema etc) - that's why i find it not specific enough..

I'm pretty sure they meant the specific "Cinema" Film Mode. It's the new film mode that wasn't present in the GH1. I haven't tested it yet myself, but I'm skeptical that the "Cinema" film mode has more pleasing highlight roll-off than other film modes like "Smooth". I plan to do a test this weekend.
