Panasonic GH1 vs. Canon 5D ??

One question:

How does the image quality of the GH-13 stack up against say the HVX-200?

hmmm I 've worked with both-- both shoot a pretty image. Hard to compare really--but seeing that the HVX sensor is about the size of your pinky and the GH-1's sensor is about the size of say...a half-dollar(US), I'm willing to bet that the GH-1 will have a better 'quality' image.

It's a hard comparison- it's like saying what's better a Porshe or a classic GTO?? their both kick a$$ cars but their different.

I believe Ben B. has a video floating around here shot at some cliffs in Cali. with a nice mix of 5D, GH-1, and HVX200, if I'm not mistaken....

But this is the age old rule of thumb that should be brought to the forefront more often....it's not the cam--it's the user!!

If you see Ben's vid- it'll be hard to tell them apart- that says a lot about the 'user', he's mixing formats, sensors, lenses, etc. and stitchin it tohether almost seamlessly- which is a tall task.

We can probably go on and on and on- about the pros and cons of these 2 cams, but right now - I'm all all about the "Transformer GH-13" formerly known as DMC-GH1......

So did the bitrate adjustment eliminate the banding issues, or just lessen them a bit? If thats still a problem that's a major point for the 5D.

What would be really cool

What would be really cool

would be for somebody with a 5Dmk2 and a GH1-3 to compare

5dmk2 with 35mm f2.8
against
GH1 with 20mm f1.7

in ISO 100-1600 and check for same exposure as well
as it is my understanding that the GH1 ISO100=ISO200 on the Canon and all other cameras too prety much.

But as a start equalising the focal length and aperture will be a start for a real comparison! the iso's could be evaluated further.

Thanks for the kind words.

Here is the video in question. The HVX stuff jumps out a bit at the beginning but is a little more seamless later on, and the GH1 stuff occasionally looks a little rough but I think it's because I was shooting this in 720p on the GH1. This was done pre 24p on the 5D (all 5D shots are overcranked to 24p) and pre GH13...just imagine the work you could do now, and now everything will be even closer. There is some color grading on this to get them to match, but there really isn't too much, and I did it in about an hour for the whole video...easily doable if you wanted to cut between these cameras. There are a few cuts in here where the GH1 and the 5D are filming basically the same thing from different angles, and it really shows you how you can cut between the two with a little grading in good conditions. Also it shows that the 5D can film the ocean without turning into moiré hell.

There is a thread that started today I believe. Not too sure if its with the lens you want though

This will be a comparison between GH1 and 7D, not 5D -- but many of the same things apply.

I work for several different departments at a University. Each department has it's own equipment and consequently I shoot with a wide spectrum of equipment on a regular basis, but most commonly a Sony EX3 (Sometimes with a Letus Ultimate), 7D with a 24-70 2.8 L lens, and my GH1 with the kit lens and some old, cheap Pentax glass.

They all get the job done and make a fine image. The EX3 is technically the most proper camera and certainly if I'm in an "uncontrolled" setting I appreciate things like having sound-on-board.

If I'm in any situation to use the Letus adaptor, frankly I'd rather use a dSLR. Especially considering how much dSLR and glass you can buy for the $4,000 the Letus costs (Before you add glass).

With or without the Letus, I find the dSLRs a lot more fun to work with. I'm not sure why that is...I think maybe just for their simplicity. The EX3 has pages and pages and pages of settings that I just don't care about. It's like EX3 is to DSLR as Traditional Camcorder is to Flip. A camcorder will give better images than a flip, but consumers have voted with their wallets and flip-style camcorders are the new choice of consumers for their simplicity and "good enough" image. The EX3 is technically capable of a better image, but the dSLRs do "Good Enough" and are just so much simpler to work with. I can carry an entire dSLR kit in the space it takes me to carry a EX3! But this wasn't supposed to be an EX3 comparison, so I'll get on with it...

Between the GH1 and the 7D, the GH1 is my personal camera. On a "casual basis" the image between the two is more similar than different, I'd say. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but at the end of the day, I prefer the GH1 for it's reduced size and weight (It's just incredible you can get so much picture out of something so tiny!!!), the beautiful swivel LCD screen + EVF, and it's ability to use pretty much any lens under the sun.

That's with no respect to the 7D, however. It's got it's high points too, and I'm lucky to have access to one. For example, we've managed some fun shots by butting the 7D on a jib and monitoring on a laptop with USB. That's just not possible with a GH1.

The 7D files are a little easier to work with (I can preview them right in Finder), but they take up a lot more space -- bring plenty of CF cards along.

Not that I want to join in this seemingly fruitless argument but when one says "more" DOF doesn't that really mean everything in focus? Shouldn't you say...less DOF if you are trying to say more blurred backgound?

Ok...I'll shut up now. :)

Best point. Good DOF means everything is in focus when you stop down. It's all been turned around for some reason. Thanks for making that point.
Now, I'll shut up too...

Loic, I will agree that the Canons are better in the low-light than the GH1, but it does not lose light with adapters to almost any lens every made, which makes for quite a few choices!

I was considering changing from my 7D to the GH! now with the new hack and have about 1.5k invested in Canon lenses but I see that you can't control the aperture...deal killer :(

Yeah, me too. I wish someone would invent an adapter where you could change aperture like the Nikon G mount one, but that would probably have to have some sort of electronics in it.

You can technically use the Canon lenses with the GH-1, it's just a pain. You have to use your Canon camera to adjust the aperture to where you want it to be, then with the DOF preview button depressed, take it off the mount. Now it's stuck in that aperture. Very annoying procedure, but when I want to use my 28-70 or 70-200 on the GH-1, I have no other choice.

Well, ND filters, I guess... that would work also. :)

What do you mean cant control aperture!

What do you mean cant control aperture!

Of your existing Canon lenses?

I'm picking up a GH1 today and have a Cameraquest Contax adaptor coming this week, so I'll be able to use my colecton of Zeiss lenses which are manual in every sense. The long focus throws of the lenses is great too.

Nice Noel, when did you get Mod v2.0 status. Anyway I'm just hearing the whole GH13 thing, and seeing the footage thats been coming from it and I must say it looks AMAZING. As you know I was waiting on Scarlet but given rece4ent announcments I can't say I'll continue, although wish I could. I would like to get some project done this year and the GH13 should do PERFECT.

BTW how are you enjoying your gear?

Just jumping in here to say that I'm doing the same thing (not waiting for the Scarlet any longer), but I'll be going with the Canon 5D Mark II.

What is a "rece4ent" ?? If you're talking about Jarred's latest, that's what set me back too.

ummm...yeah...but my point was I have Canon EOS lenses.

I am aware other lenses work on the GH1 :S

To boulder and all 7d owners: boulder has a strong argument. I didn<t know the canon eos lenses where such a pain to work with on the Gh13... I have at least 3 lenses on Canon Eos. Now I am stuck. I am not gonna start from scratch again.
