Panasonic GH1 LCD ISSUE

Hi,

I got my GH1 from B&H and I notice that the LCD has some vertical lines and horizontal lines all the time (low light and much light) when it is on live view, sometimes it shows even in the pictures. I went to a mall and saw a lot of professional cameras including the Canon MRK II, Panasonic G1 and none of them has it.

As I'm from Brasil I must be sure if this is a problem or if the GH1 has this poor quality LCD when it is on live view so I can send to US for exchange.

I'm posting some pictures of it to see if anyone can help me with this.

Thank you all in advance.

Ricardo Claper

Your view seem to show that you are using high ISO settings, which will tend to make noise issues worse - such as the "banding" that has been discussed in another long thread in this forum.

Sometimes in low light I see horizontal lines in the viewfinder and/or which do not appear in the recorded image. The viewfinder/lcd attempts to show a bright picture in all light conditions, so when light is low, the display has more noise.

I do get the same problem with all ISO ratings....I would like to know if my camera is broken? Thanks, Ricardo.

The viewfinder/LCD look like this when taking photos low-light...does it show up on the photos or video? Do you get it outdoors or in a well lit room (lots of natural light, etc) @ ISO 100? Underexposed images @ high ISOs start to look like this a lot....and don't let the big range of numbers fool you, in my opinion/experience "high" ISO starts @ ISO 400...just because you can go all the way to 1600/3200 doesn't mean that 400 isn't high ISO.

It's normal with electronic viewfinders on DSLRs. The "preview" is staying around 1/30th even if your setting is 1/2.
Except in Creative Movie Movie, you can see what your pic will look like (before noise reduction, which is only done after a pic has been taken) by activating Shutter Speed Effect.

I believe Shutter Speed Effect should always be on but the option is not there.

BTW in your LCD1.JPG above your ISO is just too high in that particular scene.

Ben_B is right and something like ISO 400 on the GH1 can equal ISO 1600 on the 5D.

On your second pic the ISO is just too high

It doesn't represent the image to the sensor. There is a button on the bottom right with a Trash Bin icon and an Iris icon. You can hit that to see a preview of what the image will look like. I'm not sure it works for all settings or video. I noticed this too but soon realized it is just the preview and not the representation of the true image. It's a must for taking long exposures at night or you wouldn't be able to see where you were lining up the shot. Since it is mirrorless it only makes sense.

Yes, it shows up on videos. I tried ISO 100 and still showing a LOT of vertical lines at night or inside my room. It looks like a grid from left to right. It even shows with more light but not that much.

Perhaps mine came defective! What do you think?

Ricardo.

You need to buy a 2nd GH1 so you can take video of this so we can see...

Panasonic 32GB SDHC Class 10 for sale

Hi Guys,

As I'm gonna return my GH1 to B&H. I have 2 Panasonic 32GB SDHC Class 10 cards for sale. One of them is sealed and the other I opened just to test the camera for one day.

If someone wants to buy them just send an email to me claper@globo.com

Best,

Ricardo

Better to send it back to B&H instead of into Panny?

Why're you selling your cards? are you going to get another camera?

Hi Ben,

It's because I need one camera for a job mid August and Panasonic GH1 it is out of stock until the end of September. I'm thinking of Canon 5D Mark II and as someone said before, it looks like all the first batch that was shipped from GH1 has this Low Light Streaks issue with stock lens. Do you have it?

Ricardo

All GH1s have low light streaks. Its CMOS fixed pattern noise.

In my case and I think for many others, this decreases after a few days. In any case, its one of those things you have to live with and work around. To me it is pretty minor. Out of the box, at least on the first night, it was a bit of a worry.

Stick in there... don't return the camera. You WILL live to regret it. The 5D2 is nowhere near as useable as a video camera and has nowhere near the lens choice (via adapters) that the GH1 has.

Consider this... I am using my GH1 with a Leica F1.4 25mm lens with full AF. Imagine how much it would cost to get that kind of lens equivalent on a full frame 5D2. If you work with it and overcome it's many foibles, the GH1 is the better deal.

Thank you Andrew,

But, right now I can't even shoot a scene at night on a mid light street as you did in Taiwan without having some fixed pattern noise with the stock lens. Do you know if I were using 1.4 lenses would be different? I saw some footage from Mark II with 3200 ISO at night from a comparative with red and GH1 here on the forum and were great. If I start to use ISO above 100 I start to see a lot of fixed pattern noise. Do you know if Canon 5D has this same fixed pattern issue?

As I work mostly for TV and I'm used with the HVX200, I can't even imagine having this fixed pattern issue on my jobs. How will I explain it to my clients?

Best,

Ricardo

Hi Andrew,

I'm shocked with your Shadowplay video, great images at night man. I can't even dream to do that with my GH1 all noised because of the FIXED PATTERN.

I really think mine came defective.

Please give me a light what do you think.

Ricardo

Dude, you haven't been clear, but is it showing up in your footage? So far you've only been talking about the LCD!

Edit: Ok, finally found the one post where you talk about the footage. My GH1 only starts showing some noise at ISO 1600, and it's not very streaky like that highlighted in the other thread (posted above).

Some guys in the still photography forum also have been talking about banding at ISOs as low as 800. I've not been able to duplicate that unless I use 3200. So it could be due to sample variation.
