Just wanted to share a Panasonic G6 and GH3 wedding I did recently (see if you can tell which is which). I rented the 12-40mm Olympus and must say I was not impressed with it for video. The autofocus is very poor for video and it gets confused and hunts way too much at the single instance of backlight, which is completely the opposite of the 12mm Olympus Prime which I wish I had (but wanted the zoom function for a wedding to grab closer shots with glidecam). It's also way too contrasty and blows out more than any other lenses - yes it was very sunny/shade in some shots but other lenses handle contrast/sun backlighting way better.

45mm Olympus was very nice but the AF for video also gets confused at the single instance of back lighting and had to do manual a few times so IMO, while a great lens, I will gun for the Panasonic version or just get a manual for the future most likely.

2nd camera man was on a GH3 with 17.5mm voigtlander which looked awesome as always.

Thanks for sharing your work! I film weddings here in the UK with the GH3 and really liked your video. I think I could tell which were the G6 shots, but only because I stare at GH3 footage day in, day out. For me the GH3 shots had better detail (guess you are using the 50bmits codec?) but you matched them nicely.

I too have the 12-40mm. I use it on a Glidecam so I can grab close-ups quickly as well. Very handy. I love the manual clutch focussing (especially as it's repeatable) but I use AF sparingly as the hunting puts me off. It's very comforting hearing someone else having issues with blowing out with this lens! I even had an odd ghosting affect on a Bride's dress once (will try and dig it out) and thought I was going mad. It's served me really well this year as my workhorse lens, but the way it handles bright whites has me questioning it, especially given our work...

I owned the 12-35mm last year (unfortunately I had to sell to survive a quiet winter =)) and I'm thinking about trading back. I love the manual focus and minimum distance on the Oly, but the Panasonic didn't have these highlights issues, has OIS and delivered a great image.

I'm always dreaming about the idea of going purely Voigtlanders (I have the 25mm and it's my favourite lens, and would love the 10.5mm that's inbound), but with weddings a zoom is just too damned handy when you need to gather a variety of shots quickly, or react to the ever changing environment.

Very cool work! What did you use as a glidecam ?

XR-1000, which is why I love the Panny's - $200 glidecam and get's the job done (though I have to reconsider the shoe shot (2nd one in) or stabilize it now that I look at it again).

Thanks, and yes I'd def. recommend the 12-35mm now - though I'd love to do ONLY 12mm Oly prime on a glidecam but just don't like the idea of having to switch lenses during bridal prep at a moment's notice. I own the kit lens 3.5 and I swear I get better latitude with that than the Oly 12-40. And AF. Wish I switched for the outdoor shots looking back but didn't want a small piece of plastic on my camera in front of a client. The GH3 camera also had the Oly 4/3 2.0 lenses at times which also helps. The G6, many people don't report this but I find I like the GH2 better in low light. No one elses mentions this and people just automatically assume the G6 is a nice GH2 successor without a hack for the ISO, but the codec falls apart starting at 1600 so I had to keep it below that. The GH2 is noisier but they make noise filters, they don't make "fix codec" filters obviously LOL. The G6 at high ISO looks like someone put NeatVideo ramped up even if you turn NR off.

Those videos look amazing. How do you manage to shoot in low light situations, can the 2.8 handle it and besides gh3 doesnt swallow life very good right? also do you white balance for each scenario, the colors look really nice

keep up the great work

Thanks. I used 1.8/1.4 tele's and the other cam was on the 17.5 voigt for the dark shots. 2.8 was just enough for the intros/first dance but switched as it got darker. And yes WB per shot I suppose - it was mixed lighting though, so tried to split as I could.
