GH5 Panasonic EVA1 New Cinema Camera from Panasonic

In a brief overview I saw with a Panasonic rep, it looks like little more than a GH5 in a larger body. No new features or capabilities to warrant the sever price jump.

It's a lot different than a GH5. It's a brand new Super 35 sensor which will have some sort of dual iso function (like the Varicam) They say it will have the Varicam color science. It's an EF mount, not M4/3. It over samples at 5.7K for the 4K image. It of course has internal ND filters, pro audio connections, etc. Much different than a GH5 all the way around.

???

S35 sensor and built in XLR doesn't warrant a price increase? Or was the video linked above in error on those things?

This is, without a doubt, the least-defensible comment I think you've ever made on these forums. If a 5.7k Super35 sensor with Dual ISO, full VLOG, using VGamut, with SDI output and XLR inputs and RAW 5.7k output and internal ND filters and everything else the EVA offers mount up to "no new capabilities" then -- well, let's just say that either you are not in the market for a professional video camera, or you have an opinion that I would wager very, very, very few people in the market would share.

The biggest advantage on the Panna is that's it's a small video camera with most pro features needed and for what it is it's actually cheap. Far from the GH5 which is something else.

I think, considering some of the offerings by other companies, the price is too high. But it sure is a mouth watering camera.

I saw it as $8,000 US, but maybe that was speculation and not concrete.

Yeah it's "Under $8000" but has a lot of important features. How about 2K up to 240 FPS Internally? Dual ISO, True 4K out of the HDMI ***AND*** SDI (The Canon C200 only allows 1080p out of the HDSDI port), and RAW to an external recording device like the Atomos Shogun Inferno.

I want to preface these comments by referring back to this 2012 quote from The Revenge of The Great Camera Shootout, “Panasonic GH2 video better than Red, Arri says Coppola” I believe this points up the fact that today really great images can be made with almost any modern camera.

I watched the Mystery Camera Presentation on Friday and frankly I’m more than a bit disappointed. I had hoped that the new camera would come in at about 4K and that it would have a MFT lens mount. Unfortunately the target price is more like 8K and it comes with an EF lens mount, this means that when you add new EF prime lenses it drives up the cost of a EVA-1 package up to almost 14K.

I don't expect many GH4/5 users to understand the true significance to dual ISO mode but it is massive in low light situations or situations where you need to shoot slow motion but want to keep the same noise quality.

We don't yet know what ISO ranges the dual ISO mode will use but if it is anything like the Varicam it alone it well worth the extra $6000. Basically what it does on the Varicam is remaps the sensor output to have two native ISO levels. One at ISO800 and one at ISO5000. So both of those levels will have the same amount of noise and be equally clean. Shoot in good light then use ISO800. Shoot a darker environment and switch to ISO5000 for the same look. Anybody who has ever shot with anything at ISO5000 or above on the GH4/5 will know just how significant that can be.

I was thinking the same thing until I thought about being able to swap out the mount. So I did research to see if possible and it is. Back focus needs to be dialed in. Then I found this...https://www.ducloslenses.com/pages/multi-mount-help
Super interesting concept!! Unfortunately it's very costly, you may as well buy a new lens. They come up with a great concept but one has to pay through the nose don't they see this as an issue? Kudos to them however for going down this road and providing this service. Also if you have a very expensive lens this might be worth doing. Anyway point is it can be done. Now it has to be cost effective for some of us.

That is a bummer in your situation but keep in mind some GH4/5 professionals have moved away from m43 glass a long time ago and use EF lenses with a SpeedBooster. There is a pretty significant percentage of GH4/5 users who already own EF glass and a good cine set from Rokinon doesn't have to be all that expensive. But yes moving to a all EF lens world from a m43 native lens world is an extra challenge for those invested in m43 glass. I think the amount of native m43 users who would realistically move to a $8,000 camera might be more of a niche market than you think however. I'm not talking those who would love to make the move but those who will actually pull out the credit card and do so without getting murdered by their significant other. Typically if somebody can afford the move to an $8,000 camera without blinking that means they pull in enough revenue each year to also not care about a set of EF lenses (assuming people in that type of market position haven't already moved to EF lenses and a SpeedBooster). Not sure where you get $14k from since a good Rokinon set of cine lenses can be had for under $2k. That puts a complete package at $10k. I'm sure you have your own unique set of lenses you feel you would need to replace. If that is the case selling your native m43 lenses is always an option.

EF lenses are honestly kind of the way to go now. BMD cameras use EF mount, Canon cinema cameras use EF mount, Panasonic Varicam and EVA1 now use EF mount. Sony cinema cameras, Sony DSLRs and m43 DSLRs are now the only ones not using an EF mount in the serious video world. Sure there is Nikon but not really a serious contended in the video world. If you ever plan on moving to BMD URSA, the Canon c200 or the EVA1 you will need EF glass. m43 will likely forever be limited to DSLR cameras and that really makes sense as EF is now kind of the unofficial universal lens standard. Like it or not it is what it is. I also love native m43 glass but it is hard to ignore the industry impact EF now has.
