Has anyone used the new cheper p2 cards in a beta or special deal?
Also why are people still selling used 16bg for 700$ if these ones are out this month at 420$
Are the new ones not as good?

Because other people are willing to buy them? I just sold my 16gig R Series on ebay for $660. Gonna get an extra 32gig E Series for that.

Exactly, thats my question, are the new ones worth less then the first set because of quality? Or is it just a over due price adjustment?

The new ones are supposed to last for 5 years if you use them everyday. Shorter lifespan. Non-issue for most of us since in 5 years many of us will be rockin' 2TB P2 cards and shooting AVC-Intra 500 :D

I'm keeping one of my "old" 32 gig cards for my daily use. I'll mostly use the new ones a few times a month so the lifespan is really of no concern.

It would seem the lifespan spec is in number of uses, but it makes me wonder why they emphasize years instead. I'd like to know if it's filled an average of once a week that it would last for 35 years or not!

Of course, like Jester implied, in 35 years we'll be shooting onto optically implanted TeraPixel imagers, connected wirelessly to storage media the size of grains of sand that hold 10,000 hours of 7680x4320 Ultra-HD footage apiece...

...or something like that...

I like your interpretation of the future Ted... LOL

And by then, you will have purchased all new equipment every 2 months to keep up with the upward trend.... 7296x4104 wasn't "Ultra enough"!

here is my take on the whole thing. the 5 year thing on its own is a non-issue, because anyone who has enough time in their day to post here isnt likely shooting enough to wear out a card before it becomes obsolete from a pro-workflow standpoint anyway.

my ONLY concern is that if they used cheaper memory that has a documented shorter life span, what other things my have been compromised as well? things that might lower the overall stability/reliability/etc.? maybe nothing... dont know... and i wouldnt fault them if they did. people have been crying about p2 pricing since day one and if this brings more people to the game - God love them for it.

but im going to let the first 6-9 months of early adopters be the testers before i rush out and buy a box of 32s ; )

I have been assured that the reliability is absolutely identical. Panasonic's entire marketing campaing, their whole message, is on "reliability". The only change is in the lifespan of the memory cells, and even then it's not a change, it's an additional option: because the "A" series cards are still available for those who need them.

just preordered a 32GB yesterday. i'll put my 16GB R series up for sale once i get my new E series.

i'm not worried about the shorter term use. these cameras are making me money. it's a tax write off for me at the end of the day.

I'm digging it!
I'll invest in a couple of 32's as soon as they are available.
As a camera operator working with P2 technology for over 4 years I trust Panasonic on the "reliability" of these cards and as anyone here knows, under normal circumstances (95% of the time probably), the lifespan will not be an issue.

I for one am looking forward to these new cards. I am not a heavy user by any means, so I think these E series cards will suit me just fine. I held off on getting another card for my new HPX170 just so I could take advantage of the lower prices of the new cards.

Question, though: would there be a problem mixing A series and E series in the camera, say if a clip needed to span two cards? It doesn't seem like it should be a problem, but thought I'd ask.

I'm still trying to understand if there is just an "expected" lifespan or it counts the number of hours on it or what. Does anyone know how this will work exactly? Is there an actual counter built into the firmware or something? And what would keep one from flashing the card or something to reset it?

I also hear this "once a day for five years", but if you really think about it, if you have 2-4 cards loaded in the camera, the cards will probably outlast the camera and even the technology, IMO

Yes, I have read that the lifespan is in number of overwrites, not absolute time; so the less you use them, the longer they last. I've seen reference to the original card as "A series" and "R series" in this thread; is there a difference? Thx...

I'd like to know this as well, along with the difference between "A" and "R" series cards.

i'm sure that would be a huge disclaimer if you could not use the new p2 cards with the older ones. that's defeat the purpose of the lower cost.
