Hello I am wondering what camera to buy because I am making a short film soon. I´ve been thinking of panasonic DVX100a, Canon XL 1s and Canon XL2. What is the diffrence between all those cameras. And wich would you choose. Don´t they all record in 25p if they are PAL?

with regards

xl1 does not do 25p really. it is a frame-mode instead of fieldmode, but not 25p. the big advantage of the XL1 is the lens if you need lots of tele-shots.

everything else goes in favour of the DVX: great wideangle as standard, 25p with amazing cinegamma settings in camera etc. search through this site and you will see that the canon XL2 is the only cam in this pricerange now that competes with the DVX100.

Different tools for different jobs. For filmmaking the DVX is my choice, and it's about $1000 (US) less than the XL2. The XL1s is discontinued and replaced by the XL2, and the XL2 is a superior camera to the XL1s in most every way, so if you can afford it (and aren't looking for used) I'd say forget the XL1s and narrow your choice to between the XL2 and the DVX. Both XL2 and DVX shoot native 25P.

The difference is that one is for PAL and the other's for NTSC, so they're for completely incompatible television systems.

If you're asking "will the 25P look filmlike, or is only the 24P filmlike" the answer is: there's probably not a living soul around who could tell the difference. 25P is the proper film simulation speed for the PAL marketplace.
