Panasonic DVX 100A DVCam  - to be used in Eur

Hi everyone from Copenhagen.

I have decided to buy the Panasonic DVX 100A, but they are very expensive in Europe.

I do have a step-up & down converter so converting 230V into 110V is not an issue, and I understand the Panasonic are also capable of recording in 25P PAL as well as 24P NTSC of course.

I´d like to know if there´s anything that would prevent me from using it in a PAL country? Like batching the video material into my PC and so forth.

I would sincerely appreciate any help in this matter.

All the best,
Sten F

Gromit,

you don't really need the converter. DVX100A comes with an adaptor that will take 110-240V, 50-60Hz.

As far as using NTSC in Europe, I'd advice against it. PAL 25P is very close to 24P, without the necessary pulldown. When you use 24P, you are losing about 20% of temporal resolution, AND you end up with lower spatial resolution of NTSC as compared with PAL. Of course, you'd always have trouble showing the NTSC footage on any PAL TV.

Other than that, transferring footage into your PC should not be a problem. But if you look for quality picture and are in a PAL country (which Denmark is), stick with PAL model. It's probably worth the extra money.

gromit,
there is a NTSC and a PAL version. to use NTSC in europe will not make sense at all. you will end up with problems to show footage to people.

they have it now for Euro 2700 which is a good price and several members here say they are reliable. buy an additional Mack-warranty from them and you can get it fixed in DK any time.

Hi Gromit,

The PAL version of the DVX100 can't record NTSC, the NTSC version can't record NTSC. So you have to choose. I recommend going for the PAL version. The PAL version only offers 50i or 25P. 25P is much easier in your NLE then 24P (you can avoid the 24P path as the 24P modes need pulldown methods in your NLE): you just set a PAL project in your NLE to "progressive" instead og "interlaced lower field".
And... with the PAL version you have a bigger resolution.

The only reason I can think of considering a NTSC version in Europe is converting to 16 or 35 mm film, as film formats are already have the same framerate (24P). But I always think that for converting to film you need every resolution you can think of, so the PAL camcorder is the better one. And going from 25P video to 24P film is possible, but it needs good tools and the conversion house to do that job.

He should definitely use PAL in Europe, but the 20% loss in temporal resolution is between 24p and 60i, not 24p and 25p.

Sorry - that's what I meant. Using 24P in NTSC loses 20% of temporal resolution while keeping the 20% lower spatial resolution of NTSC (compared with PAL). Therefore I'd go with PAL because it makes up the lower temporal resolution (when compared to 60i) with higher number of pixels.

I've heard that showing 25P on a 24P timeline is in most cases barely noticeable - it's only 4% difference in speed. Of course, if he wants to match 25P sound track with drop-frame NTSC and all that nonsense, it might be a different story...

Thanks, for all the valuable info.

Yes, I figured it would be best to go with a PAL model as I live in a PAL country. Seem obvious.

Would anyone happen to know if a PAL model can be purchased over the Internet for around USD 2000? Or is that wishful thinking?

In europe the prices are very high for this model.

In amercia anyone offering a DVX100A around that price must be an unauthorised dealer, with lots of undesirable issues attached with their offer.

Well, maybe it´s worth the effort and wait until February/March - when the new Sony Z1U hits the street - and see if Panasonic drops the price on the DVX100A to attract consumers to buy Panasonic instead of the new Sony model.

Is that a valuable thought?
