Tokyo, Japan, Mar 9, 2006 - (JCN Newswire) - Panasonic, the leading brand for which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is best known, today announced that it is developing a 4 GB SDHC (SD High-Capacity) Memory Card based on the new SD Specifications Version 2.00. The new specifications were established to meet the growing demand for HD (High Definition) video and high-resolution image recording used in many SD enabled devices. The 4 GB SDHC Memory Card is scheduled for global release in the summer of 2006.

I don't want to go too far into reading into this press release, but 4 GB x 4 SD Cards = 16 GB. So, it IS possible to see 16 GB P2 cards this summer, BUT there could be a delay in getting them out the door. So, Summer or Fall 2006 is a LIKELY time for us to see the first 16 GB P2 cards shipping.

One more thing, I'll bet that when the first 16 GB P2 Cards come out, there will be a delay before most can get their cards. This is because early production runs are small and there are always problems to iron out first. However my best GUESS is that by December getting a 16 GB P2 Card is not likely to be an issue.

That'll be nice. I really want to see those prices come down though. I think Panasonic needs to get some 3rd party P2 manufacturers competing for business. Then we'll really start seeing price drops.

yeah it will be cool if the prices come down but i doubt they will come down drastically. Im not banking on someone else making p2 cards either.. but who knows.

Interesting side note though. I have shot about 30 hours so far on P2 in the last month. Given the cost of tape is about $5, those $600 cards are already 1/4 paid for.

To be fair, though, what was the additional cost for archiving those 30 hours?

exactly the same price as it cost to archive tapes.. If i shoot on tape the footage ends up on a hard drive anyways.

And i was being more than fair by comparing it to DV tapes.. I should be comparing that to DVCPRO HD tapes, in which case the cards would be paid for.

Those DVCPRO HD tapes are a bit on the pricey side. Thanks for the news Bob. Can't wait to see what happens this summer or at NAB. I might be going this year.

I doubt you would throw the tapes away, so, by comparison, you currently only have one archive whereas with tapes you would have two.

P.S. I'm a P2 fan, so just playing Devil's advocate here. Someone was bound to bring it up anyway.

for the last 3 years I have bought a hard drive per client and stored those on a shelf... that show i archive. Ive never gone back to a tape yet for a client.. its way faster having a hard drive with all project media that i can just plug in and go.

I did this before P2.. now P2 just makes it a no brainer. Right after a shoot, i take the external drive and burn the cards to dvd-r as a backup for the producer.

Gee, where have we seen that before? :-P

I also like what the censor mechanism did to the quote in your post... maybe Matsupoo pooa should rethink their name? :cheesy:

"which Matsupoo pooa Electric "

Noone else thinks the swearing filter made a very funny mistake?

" There is a catch though, Secure Digital was never designed for capacities over 1 GB, that was solved but then addressing anything over 2 GB became the next problem. To solve this the SD Association have proposed SDHC, essentially the same physical format as SD but only compatible with SDHC devices (such as the new Panasonic DMC-L1). So it's good news and bad news.

It's worth noting that SDHC hasn't actually been finalized yet. The other oddity with SDHC is that it requires a minimum speed rating of either 2, 4, 6 or 8 MBps continuous for video recording. There's no information about the speed rating of this new card."

Okay, there we go...that's what I was heading towards. So factor in the (very minor) cost of the DVD-R's as well.

Besides, we really shoudn't be comparing the cost of P2 cards against tape anyway. Rather, just what it costs to store the P2 data after it's off the cards.

You won't see a 16GB P2 card before the end of 2007 at the very earliest (anyone here actually knows how a japanese engineer thinks and works?..) As for other manufacturers making P2 cards, yeah, maybe starting with the summer of 2069...

And you don´t ge worried about loosing the data on a HD? I never had trouble with a broken HD but I just don´t trust them, yet. :badputer: :(???¿¿¿ :(

well let me tell you tape sucks balls compared to Hard drives and DVD-R's.

Hmm... I believe we'll have 16gb cards soon enough. DOn't forget, P2 was developed with higher capacity cards in mind- remember the roadmap of the P2 cards?

Anyway, I expect to see them this fall.

i actually see the 16gb cards coming sooner or later, I imagine its high on the panasonic list because of people's whining about the whole 8gb 1080 limit.

When the 16GB P2 cards come out, two 16GB P2 cards will give us 32 minutes at the highest data rate, 64 minutes at DVCPRO50 (or 720@30p), and 80 minutes at 720@24p.
