Panasonic BT-LH80W SDI vs Component

My dealer charges $600 for the sdi board and $50 to install. Can I do the job myself with my Swiss Army Knife?
Can anyone post some installation pix?

You can easily do the job yourself if you have the slightest bit of skill with working with small objects.

You pull off 11 screws off the monitor, and flip it open. You then snap in a small circuit board. Then you plug in a miniature coaxial cable, it's really rather tiny and will probably take you 20 seconds to get it right. Then you attach a fastener that keeps the cable in place via two screws. Then you put the case back on and fasten the 11 screws and you're done.

Hey, ship it to me, I'll install it for you for $50, that'll be the easiest $50 I ever made :)

Seriously, unless you've never worked near circuit boards (and thus don't know how to discharge static electricity etc) you really should be able to install it easily. Or ask your dealer to waive the installation charge. It's seriously just 10 minutes' work, you might get 'em to waive it.

Thank You Guys...I will do this job.
There is no dealer or Panny service here in São Paulo that do this to me.
Believe or Not...
God bless DVXU...

That is weak they are charging for the install. Tell them you will purchase from someone else unless they do it for you. How much did they charge for the monitor?

Hi guys & gals,
New poster to your forum but have read it a lot.

I'm looking at the BT-LH80W for on-camera critical focus, so please inform me:

1. can I use the pixel to pixel also as a magnify for focus, and can i switch it off and on
while recording? or can it at least stay on while recording? (for example the XHA1's magnify feature doesn't stay on while recording - bummer)

2. focus in red - gimmick or does it really work. can you use it in conjunction with magnify (pixel to pixel) or are you not able to use it simultaneously?

...and how best do you use your BT-LH80W for critical focus? I am doing a lot of corporate work, run and gun, so a quick methodology with this monitor would be helpful...

thank you,
Lonnie

I won't be able to afford the sdi module upfront (down the road option)...

Will I be able to achieve my goals of sharp focus using Component HD inputs with the XHA1 and for future proofing purchases with the EX1?

thanks,
Lonnie

You've got 3 function buttons you can assign to different things. I keep mine assigned to the waveform, focus in red, and blue only. Focus in Red pretty much nails it all the time for me. You can use it along with pixel to pixel if you wish. You cant use the waveform monitor with either of them though. Pixel to Pixel stays on as long as you leave it on. For run and gun Focus in Red rules. Cranking the peaking all the way up is also a HUGE help. I'm doing alot of documentary interviews and have been letting the interviewees see the playback and I've quickly learned to turn the peaking off for them as it accentuates wrinkles a bit :)

I did the installation myself; it's not hard, takes about 10 minutes. But, of course, if you don't know anything about installing circuit boards or aren't comfortable opening up your new $2200 monitor, $50 is very cheap for the safety of having it be installed by someone who knows what they're doing, and will take full responsibility if they mess it up.
