EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

I am in the market for a lightweight documentary camera, so I am deciding between the C300 MII, the C200 and the Eva1. What I like so far is the portability, the cheap media and the relatively cheap batteries which can be used with the Eva1. Even fully rigged this probably would be the most economical solution out of the three. What attracts me to the canons on the other hand is the snappy autofokus and face detection. Question: Is there an equal kind of technology onboard the Eva1? What I also like at the Eva1 is the 5.7K sensor. Wished it could shoot picture stills in RAW quality at 17 mega pixel! That would mean a considerable argument if not a game changer for me (no more need for an additional photo camera on the set). Maybe this is a future firmware upgrade we could hope for? Just my 0.2 cents :)

Autofocus - No.

Buy a GH5 if you want the stills capability. That camera has everything the EVA1 has minus the form factor and better sensor DR in the EVA1. Sure there are niceties like ND, punch in focus, additional color controls and timecode but you can get the XLR adapter, cage, native m43 lenses for autofocus. Speed booster for EF compatibility. PL for cine lenses. I will be flying my GH5 for gimbal shots and EVA1 for everything else. I also own the URSA mini 4.6k and I REALLY like that cam but it's just a little to heavy for run and gun rigged.

Hi Mitch,

In terms of ISO, what is the affect on Dynamic Range?

14 stops @ Base ISO or 800 or 2500?

?? stops @ stopped down to 1600 or 1000 from Base ISO 2500? Or stopped down to 400/200 from Base ISO 800?

?? stops @ stopped up to 1600 from Base ISO 800, or up to 3200, 4000 from Base ISO 2500?

I see people talking about stopping down from Base ISO 2500 to get a cleaner ISO 1600 but I am wondering the impact on DR of shooting off of Base ISO on the EVA-1?

Much thanks.

Six minutes of untouched 4K VLOG from the camera. I'll upload the individual clips soon. Y'all are welcome.

Everything was shot with the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 on the EVA1. Aperture was mostly at f/2.8. No autofoucs was used. I manual focused with the focus square feature (which I love BTW). The only light source was a small Hive light with a softbox over it. I measured it at about 500-700 lux where most people were standing in the video.

All footage is untouched VLOG straight from the camera. The noise definitely looks worse on YouTube. If you apply a LUT to the raw footage it looks way better.

2:42 I compare ISOs 2500-25600 then down to 1000.
4:00 I turn on EIS and test it a bit.

You mean like this? :p

Here's the mother lode:
4K 10bit 422 clips from the EVA1
15 are in VLOG and 1 is in Rec709
Most of the shots are with the 2500 base ISO
The white balance is wrong on all clips. The camera was set to 3200k with a 5500k light source. I didn't realize until I shot most of the clips (kinda hard to tell with VLOG).
These are mainly just random shots I took while exploring the camera and testing out focus assists.
Have fun playing around with them and look out for the cameo from Mitch Gross!

At 14:10 you are talking about new codecs on the next firmware update...can we have more details on this?

The EVA1 is shipping now with LongGOP codecs in 150/100/50mbps varieties. In early 2018, All-I intraframe codecs will be added in 400/200/100mbps varieties. Recording capabilities will be the same for frame rate/resolution/bit-depth/color-sampling combinations, just additional codec options available for given modes.

14 stops at the native ISOs of 800 & 2500. Eight stops under middle grey, six stops over middle grey.

I believe as one gets to the extremes of the ISO gains there may be some clamping of the range, but it's not by much. And when you shift a stop or so either way the effect on DR is negligible.

Sorry I don't have more precise data on that at this moment.

Is anyone else noticing what looks to be fixed pattern noise at 2500 ISO? Saw it in Noel's footage and now seeing it in this footage too.
Not sure if it shows up at 800 ISO but if the "dual native ISO" function renders footage with fixed pattern noise, I'm not so sure it's a super usable feature.

That being said, the FPN is only showing up in the low mid tones/shadows - anything below around 35IRE.
Tried multiple denoiser plugins - it only worsened the flickering FPN patterns.

I attached an ungraded 1080 crop of one frame from a section where I see FPN. You can see multiple horizontal lines - a couple running through the middle of the frame, and a few lesser lines below. Hard to see in the still images (and even harder to see once uploaded and compressed here) but it's hard to miss when in motion on the original file. It is from the A002C003 clip, timestamp 00:00:03:11, if anyone else wants to take a look.

Has anyone else noticed this? Any chance it's a low codec bandwidth issue rather than a sensor noise issue?

I noticed that in the prior footage too. As well as lots of magenta and what seems to be IR pollution in some other footage. Since people are so sensitive about this camera I didn't bother bringing it up. I knew soon or later others would see it too.

Check out the Proav video just posted. I noticed FPN on the slow-mo in the mothers hair. Maybe it's just me though.

That was in 2.2k mix mode which drops the base ISO to 1250 from 2500. In that clip they had ISO pushed to 3200 which would have been like pushing it to 6400 in the regular shooting setting. 5.7k and 2.8k mix mode stay at the 800/2500 base ISOs. so you can shoot up to 120fps without taking that hit. I'll likely avoid 240fps but I'm glad it's there.
