I'm presuming he means that activating the sensor crop(4/3 image area mode) is a dive into the menu and not a simple one or two button process that can be done super fast on-the-fly in a run & gun situation. In other words, you're gonna have to stop what you're doing to activate it.

That's correct. It's not a terribly long process, perhaps 10 seconds once you're used to it, but it isn't an on-the-fly sort of thing.

Attendees did just that at last night's EVA1 event in NYC where we screened the short films, had a Q&A with one of the filmmakers and offered lots of hands-on time with the camera in multiple setups. One of the EVA1 demo setups was with a Sigma 24-70 Art and people commented how comfortable it was to use. In the Q&A, filmmaker Elle Schneider noted how she as a petite woman especially valued the light weight, ergonomic adjustable hand grip and well-balanced overall design of the EVA1. One part of her film was a crew of just one, where she went out with two actors to capture a scene handheld.
Thanks, Mitch. I hope to try the camera with lens personally to evaluate the weight. I don't know when the camera will be show in Italy, I think for October all this informations will be more clear to me.

Ehy Mitch, but if the camera weights 2.1 kg and the Sigma lens 1,020g, you will have a 3,0kg camera to work with. How could be used handled?

We've been shooting handheld with cameras that weigh way more than that for years.

Just to keep things in perspective, here are some common set-ups in the professional world: A Canon 1D series still camera with 70-200/2.8 IS is heavier, a Canon C300 weighs over 5lbs before you even put a lens on it and one of my VariCams with glass and battery is at least 25lbs+.

hey mitch, can you load in custom luts into the EVA1? would the pomfort livegrade work on this particular camera? also do any of the camera buttons lit up in the dark or do you need to shine a light on it?

Next about the one shot AF, is it a box in the center screen? or can you move the box via the handgrip to focus different parts of the screen? i assume this one shot function will work on 3rd party EF lenses like sigma/tamron/tokina too?

and since you can do 4:2:2 10bit internal on 24/25 and 30p i assume if you record externally via a recorder like atomos/7Q+ there won't be much difference in quality?

Hi Mitch, when will the official films that were screened last night be available for online viewing?

Probably not ideal for the first clips rolling out to be ones such as the one linked above.

Looking forward to seeing the footage from yesterday!

It looks like it will be more and more difficult to prove the camera is a good one with odd footage showing up. Have people such a hard on for this camera and cannot make something good?

The EVA1 camera body is quite small, and the LCD can extend quite far in front of the camera. Shape and other 3rd party manufacturers are making top plates with extension arms for the LCD to be placed far forward. The mount is a 15mm rod or at a different point a 1/4"x20 threaded bolt. Common stuff for mounting. I don't know how farsighted you might be, but certainly for balance you should be able to get the LCD where you need it. You'd be surprised how far out that 16" will get you.

Ive not measured the FS7 but it wont go where I need it (consider Ive tried to balance that with a CN17-120) which basically puts the camera behind you (!) - Its odd.. there are little things that make the cameras work well or not :)

Does the SDi have focus punch as I guess the onboard EVF does?

ARRI makes great ones. And it's a bit of a thankless endeavor. Plenty of people complained about the Raven one being *too* produced.

So it looks like both the C200 and the EVA1 demo videos have random dancers gyrating in arctic environments under completely flat lighting situations.

Why is Red the only camera company that understands how to make good camera demos?

Well, in another thread, when many here asked for a demo showing the EVA-1 in extenuating, high contrast, DR-stretching scenarios... such as sunny outdoors, live events, challenging lighting, natural lighting, low lighting, etc. the answer given was along the lines of "why would we want to show the camera at its worst?".

So I think until we see more user demos, the samples we receive may be limited on how helpful they are in terms of comparing the EVA-1 in the scenarios where's its purported feature set and benefits really matter most (at least to many of us). Instead, the films we get will likely all be ideal low contrast conditions in stunning locations and/or well lit productions with a team... great for comparing image sharpness and color rendition, but not so much for how it handles the heat in the aforementioned scenarios...

RED understands how to make good camera demos because they also have full confidence that the sensor and cameras they are making are some of the best on the market, period, not a more budget/entry level $7000 camera. The Red looks outstanding in hyper challenging scenarios so there's really nothing to fear, only to gain - it's all show off for them. The EVA-1 should be excellent for it's price point, but would look "bad" compared to a camera system running 10x as much for a comparable setup. As expected.

Honestly, I am guessing that most people here would be very impressed with what the EVA-1 can do in challenging scenarios, but the internet is fully of useless camera comparison videos judged by people who know nothing of how cameras work, so I understand Panasonic wanting to mitigate the risk here and only show demo footage in the best of scenarios, despite how annoying it is for those of us trying to accurately judge a camera's comparative strengths and weaknesses for our own use cases, with an informed opinion and expectation of what we're looking for.

Though at this point, it's been over 24 hours since the NYC screening and I am wondering why we can't see any of this footage online?? I was expecting to see videos posted last evening, but I guess that's still in limbo..

No custom LUTs in EVA1. Just a standard Rec709 setting. Of course the SDI & HDMI outputs could be fed into various LUT boxes or devices that also have LUT functions such as a Teradek COLR or an Odyssey7Q+.

One Touch AF is center-weighted. It will control many, many lenses from various manufacturers.

Internal v. external recording can be a question of what your post is set up for. Depending on the way you work it may be more efficient to use one v. the other for you. For instance if you work with an Avid system then it may be easiest to work with DNx files. Also, outputs are 10-bit 422 at all frame rates and resolutions. This is true even when the internal recording is limited to 8-bit 420. Otherwise quality is quite comparable.
