EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

I don't really know too much about it yet. I know that it is 2-axis (east/west, north/south) and that the image crops in slightly to allow for room inside the resolution. The sensor itself remains static.

Did you use it at all in any of your tests? Looking to hear about its effectiveness. Thanks.

I find the one-touch AF pretty fast and responsive. It's a grab it sort of thing. In weak light it might go past and come back, but in playing with it a bit everyone seemed to consider it quite fast.

mitch i got 3 questions! 1. what is the spec of the DC input on the EVA1? assuming i like to run a V-mount battery to that d connector at the back of the camera, what are my options? do i need a power regulated cable? who makes them? can you include a link here please...

2. the audio functions on the EVA1, are there switches on the camera body to turn it on? or do you need to go into the menu to set the levels? also does the EVA1 have a built in stereo scratch mic?

3. what is the boot up time of the EVA1? assuming you change frame rates from 120p-240p or in between? is it pretty seamless and fast or do you need to reboot the camera everytime you do a frame rate change?

Would've loved the stabilization I've got in my gx85, it's amazing, but I get why not as easy with a bigger sensor. Hopefully due to the 5.7k it can crop in enough to make a big difference while still managing to keep image quality.

1, The DC input is a nominal 12v, with a range from 10.5-13.5v. The connector is an EIAJ Type 4, which is what Panasonic ha used on numerous products in the past. It's the same power connection input on our Dual Bay battery charger, one of which comes with the EVA1. The power supply unplugs from the charger and can plug into the camera for power. The camera does require power regulation as some V-mount bricks fully charged can top 16v and they nominally run 14.4v, so too high for 13.5v. Cables with regulators are out there but I don' have links (Let me Google that for you...). I do know at least one or two companies that are developing product specifically for EVA1 and they will offer the appropriate power regulation solutions. You'll hear from them when they're ready.

2, There are two audio pots on the side of the camera, under a door with cutouts for the pots. This design is common for Panasonic, as it protects the pots from being accidentally changed while still allowing adjustments. The only physical switches are auto/manual for each input and these are located next to the pots. The rest are in an audio menu. That's because none of those controls are things you need on the fly, like switching from line level to mike level. There is plenty of control in that menu. There are stereo scratch mikes on the camera, located directly above the lens mount. The microphone mount on the top handle of the camera can be removed if you don't want it or fear breaking it. Removing it reveals another mount point for the LCD monitor.

3, The bootup time on the current engineering sample is about 3 seconds. That may change slightly as we move to the final release production units. Not all modes are operational yet in these cameras so I don't know for absolute sure, but currently there are no modes which require a reboot of the camera. Switching between current modes happens as fast as the controls can be set in the menu. BTW the initial bootup is the only time you hear the internal fan, as it purposefully ramps up quickly in case there is any dust or moisture. It is otherwise effectively silent.

Mitch...here's a first and maybe a precedent.

What's unfavorable about the camera? What would AbelCine Mitch say he's maybe a bit dissatisfied with?

haha :engel017:

Turns out i got more questions mitch!

-Does the EVA1 have 'false color' as an exposure tool? also do you press 'EIS' everytime to engage the stabilization? what happens if you already turned on image stabilization on your canon lens? do you need to engage EIS on top of that to get extra stabilize shots?

-Also can the EVA1 LCD do anamorphic desqueeze and is there any type of anamorphic shooting mode on the EVA1?

-the 240p slow mo crop option, is that considerably softer than 120p non crop?

-also is there an option to turn up the brightness of the screen? what is the max it will go assuming i want to use it outdoors?

-last but not least how do you engage the one shot auto focus on the EVA1 cos i don't see any physical button on the camera itself? or do you tap the touch screen to get the one shot auto focus function?

I decided to run my GH5 and a Shogun off a Vmount too, as they are both quite power hungry...found an adapter to DTap at B&H that has the Voltage regulated in line rather than in the dummy adapter that fits inside the camera...very happy with it...you may check with them. Made by IndiPro...

Exposure Tools:
EVA1 does not have false color. It has Zebras, Spotmeter and Waveform.

EIS
Press EIS to engage/disengage. Engage IS on the lens by flipping the switch on the lens. Add to it by engaging EIS. They function independently.

Anamorphic desqueeze
Not available on the EVA1. I am unaware of any anamorphic EF-mount lenses. That's a great feature on the VariCam LT.

240p
This is not implemented on the test cameras at the moment as our priority was to complete features in 4K first. However I can point out that the 240p mode is derived from the 4.5K resolution sensor area instead of the 5.7K area. Reduced to 2K or HD, I question how much of a difference one will be able to perceive. The crop is a fairly mild one, from Super-35 to the 4/3rds image area.

LCD brightness
There are some basic LCD adjustments including brightness. There's also a function called Power LCD, which juices the backlight on the panel to get it much brighter. I don't know numbers on this.

One-Shot AF
This function can be engaged as one of the User Buttons. Not everyone will use such a function so it was not made a dedicated button.

These all sound like good features set up in a usable way.

1. Does the one touch AF work only at certain frame rates? Will it work on frame rates over 60 FPS? What will be the highest frame rate on the inital shipping units?

2. As far as you know, on any of the film shoots, did anyone shoot or test combining lens IS with the EIS? Does it work using better using both or not as well as one or the other? Choices are great so it will be nice to compare the cameras EIS with what an IS lens does.

3. Are there any other focus tools besides the squares, magnify or peaking?

One-Touch AF
I believe this works at all frame rates.

Frame Rates
On first shipment the EVA1 will offer 4Kup to 60p, 2K/HD up to 240p.

Stabilization in demo shoots
I do not believe any of the demo films utilized lens of camera image stabilization.

Focus Assists
Focus tools consist of the Squares, Peaking and Expand (image magnify) modes.

Thanks for clarifying Mitch, much appreciated.

It's been months since the question of how EIS specifically works (qualitatively and quantitatively) came up - when can we expect details on this?

Additionally, early on in the original announce post, it was mentioned that it would not just be ordinary EIS and Panasonic was doing some cool things there. What makes the EIS implementation on the EVA-1 unique? How will it compare to EIS on the GH5, AF100, or competitors? Where is it officially or unofficially recommended, and where might it give results or problems that may be undesirable in professional use cases?

Probably a dumb question here. What does One Touch Autofocus entail specifically? Touch screen tap? I'm coming from the GH4 here.

Read up npm, this was already asked and Mitch already answered this above. Don't make him repeat himself.

from the images i see online, i am curious about a few buttons... is the 'view' button for playback? and what about 'thumbnail'? are they different things? or is thumbnail a screen grab kinda thing?

next i see there are only 5 user programmable buttons? what buttons are there on the side grip? is there a dedicated magnify button on the grip itself or must you user map to enable it?

how many 'looks' or luts are there in the EVA1? is it only the 709 look and nothing else? or is there a P3/rec2020 look built into it?

Just a guess: When a m4/3 lens is mounted, there will be similar benefits from synchronized lens and sensor IS. With the m4/3 crop, there will be plenty of free sensor space for digital IS while resolution stays above 4k.
