EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

Mitch, do you have a list of brand/model of supported SD cards for the 400 Mbps bitrate?

I know its marked on the PDF but looking at the SanDisk and Lexar website is confusing.

All I know are the Panasonic V90 SDXC cards. Doesn't mean others won't work, I just don't know about them. The camera will protect you from trying to record on a card that can't handle the selected data rate.

My name isn't Mitch, but check out Adata and Delkin as two of the v90 cards that I know are on market right now.

Take a look at the price differences.

Take a look at the price differences...

The Panasonic card is currently not available, with an estimated ship date of September - October.

The ADATA card is also currently not available.

...And the Delkin V90 card that is available has two reviews on the B&H Photo web-page where both reviewers are complaining that the card is too slow for a V90 card.

So this all looks way too premature to be judging the cost of V90 cards right now. We have to wait until there are lots of cards from at least a half dozen different manufacturers, before deciding what is too expensive.

If i keep my EVA1 pre-order (depends on footage we see) I won't bother buying a v90 card until the 400mbps firmware update is released. I've already got SD cards for my Blackmagic Micro that are plenty fast enough for 150mbps.

Looks like the Sony FS5 is getting a permanent price reduction. I wonder if this is in response to the EVA-1 ?

At the moment it looks like the EVA-1 is going to work out too expensive for me here in Europe.
Already we are looking at 8,400 (including vat) for the body alone. When you add in a basic lens and a few batteries
and SD cards it will more than likely come to about 10,000 Euro.
I think my GH5 will have to do me until the price comes down a bit.

That sounds like a plan. I will probably do the same thing as I have a lot of SD cards for my BMPCC.

My current cache of DVX200-compatible batteries and SDXC media should be able to tide me over until the 400mbps update, then v60/90 cards should be more commonplace and a bit less expensive.

Not to mention that if you don't already own an external recorder you also need to buy that to get proper codecs for the above 30p frame rates :S and add on top of that: batteries for it and media.

For some reason European customers always seem to be paying a premium for their cameras, probably down to vat rates and tariffs.

I had hoped for a 6,500 Euro Price (including vat)
With worldwide camera sales falling it seemed like an ideal time for Panasonic to be aggressive and poach customers from Sony and Canon.
With no other Panasonic product in this price ranger and the DVX200 retailing for 4,000 Euro
they could potentially increase sales and take over this market segment.
From what I can see camera sales are shrinking and the price you get for second hand gear is almost non existent.
It's up to Panasonic how they wish to price and sell the EVA-1 but IMHO it would make sense to
go in lower and take all the sales, than hold out for more and sell less.

Anyone following me on Facebook? I've been posting lots of photos of EVA1 in action and on special visits. And today we announced the NY & LA EVA1 events with screening of the three EVA1 shorts, Q&As with the filmmakers and hands-on time with the cameras. September 11 in NYC and September 14 in LA. RSVP and additional info on Eventbrite.

mitch-

thanks for the heads up.

i registered for the nyc event but saw no mention of the "get your free eva1" raffle event.

;-)

be well.

So I'm finally back to home base after several weeks on the road with our EVA1 sample film shoots. As announced, these films will be premiering at screening events in New York and LA in early September, followed shortly by screenings at IBC in Amsterdam and then release to the web. And there's more fun stuff to come, but news of that will come n due time.

Meanwhile, I'm finally able to spend a bit of time here on DVXuser again. It can be hard to participate on a forum while on the road so much, certainly harder then commenting here and there on social media. But now i have a lot more EVA1 time under my belt so I'm happy to answer all the questions I can. Some stuff I may have to hold back on or still not have proper answers, but I'll share as best I can. Some answers I don't know until I take a look on the camera itself, like the other day when someone asked me does EVA1 offer an Erase Last Clip function (Answer: Yes it does).

So feel free to Ask Me Anything.

Mitch, objectively, how do you feel the one-touch auto focus works for users of other cameras with one touch like the C100/300 MKIs? I use it all of the time on my C100 and it works pretty well, especially with the Canon STM lenses. Not as well with my older AF lenses like the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS and the 28mm 1.8, those lenses are much slower to focus. They get there, but they take their time, I don't know if that is a function of not having a stepping motor or if the C100 is not that responsive with non-STM lenses. Is the one touch AF on the EVA 1 responsive and usable in fast moving documentary situations or would you personally just use all manual focus with the squares in that situation?
