Maybe I am misunderstanding something, or maybe some of you guys are.
The EVA1 is quoted as weighting 2.63 lbs, that is closer to 3 than the 2 people keep saying. The stripped LT is supposedly 2.4 lbs heavier. That comes out to 5.3 lbs in my math.
EVA1 under $8000, stripped LT $14000. Now if you add those $10000 worth of accessories to both you get $24000 14 lb LT. or an $18000 12 lb EVA1. Lenses are going to add $10000 to $50000 to those prices.
The actual savings seem to be minor, 2 lbs and $6000 off, maybe a $50000 total for the Varicam LT.
So what am I missing here, in an apples to apples comparison?
I think that the thing with these cameras are that the accessories usually are more heavy:
The control panel for the LT is heavier (I'm pretty sure) than the LCD for the EVA1.
The P2 cards are heavier than SD cards.
The handgrip (including extension) for the LT is probably heavier than the one for EVA1.
This is also just a guess, but I think that when you buy a more expensive camera you'll probably also buy more pro grade accessories (like EVF) while the EVA1 can be used with a loupe. Yes, the LT can be stripped down and the EVA1 can be kitted so that it weighs "a ton" but let's say you're using it on a quadcopter or in/on a car, then those few pounds and smaller size make a difference. Also, if you're using the EVA1 as a B-camera for the LT and the EVA1 is just sitting on a tripod, you don't have to have many accessories, just set the framing, press record and go back to the LT.
But, if you're looking for a camera with a full kit and the same accessories, of course the price difference will only be the camera body (and media). The more accessories you add, the less the relative price difference will be (and this of course applies to all cameras).
