EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

The pitfall to incorporate much technology into a 7,4V driven camera is...

Not incorporating a 12V+ battery will also complicate powering some accessories, such as Zacuto's Gratical EYE.

The EYE would be a great EVF for EVA, but will require hanging a brick battery of the little camera's backside.

I wouldn't mount a camera on top of a battery, & wonder how well a brick would go on the back due to the placement of the XLRs, SDI, etc.

Would love a smaller camera to simplify air travel, but seems EVA may not be right for my needs. Will need to see the final product.

I spent some time with the mockup today at Cinegear. I think it's a nice design. Bern, regarding putting a brick at the back of the camera, it should work fine given the usual air gap--I'd say two inches or so. Connectors come out the right side at an angle to help with this. I like the package.

This is kind of a perfect example of why the Panasonic photo division is kicking the ass of of the Panasonic video division in the realm of video. On the GH5 they went the extra mile to try to put in everything their customers wanted. With this new video camera it's more a game of giving just as much as is necessary to keep the peace. I think it's pitiful.

Agreed...my beef re the M4/3 mount (not sensor) notwithstanding...you'd have to run rails out the back and a battery pinch and Vmount brick....7.4 v is not going to run this processing power and an EVF for long, if adequately at all, so there goes the small form factor...

How in the world is a brand new dual ISO Super 35 sensor with Varicam color science 10 bit 4:2:2 internal 4K and raw output to come, all for less than $8,000 (being Panasonic, probably much less) just enough?

Well if you studied your history you would have seen that when the GH5 was initially announced, very little was revealed, and with the final product (as you so eloquently put it) "they went the extra mile to try to put in everything their customers wanted".

Why do you not think the same can happen here? And what is this peace you speak of?

I have a question...can you now please share which Sigma lens was under the sheet? Just wondering, ha.

And was it a full-frame lens because you will need a full-frame lens to cover the 5.7K RAW?

Honestly don't know which Sigma it was. We did a "hey can we borrow something -- any of those ART lenses would be great" and it was stuck on.

The sensor is Super-35 in size. You don't crop 5.7K to get 4K, the sensor is supersampled, yielding a better 4K because it starts as 5.7K.

The pitfall to incorporate much technology into a 7,4V driven camera is that it can be difficult to do signal processing as good as possible. There's a reason why higher speced cameras needs 12V or more to power it all. That will be the weak spot in this camera. Signal processing.

Then there's not much room to customize buttons, as there as so few, so usability might take a hit. Corners cut in not including a simple EVF loupe for the LCD is another. But that they can atleast configure until launch if they'd like.

As far as AF I wouldn't expect anything. Same thing with EIS as it won't be that great. I can see Sony doing IBIS soon on their S35 cameras.

Once again you are talking out of your ass. You have no clue. For example, we can absolutely handle the processing on the available power. And there's a bunch of programmable buttons.

Mitch, is there a ball park range the engineers are targeting for ISO and DR? I can't help but feel those numbers were left out so as not to damage LT sales.

There's more than a ballpark range. We had specific targets, and have already hit them. But we believe that we will be able to exceed them in the tweaking process. So we don't want to say any numbers and be pigeonholed. If I said a spec was X now and later we got it to X+1, no one would remember and we'd be falsely labelled as X. So we purposefully did not state these numbers.

Wow, the Eva 1 looks pretty amazing. So many great features, built in IS is a great feature. Mitch, it's great to know you're the customer facing person when it comes to the Eva1, everyone who owns or has owned a Odyssey 7Q knows how reliable you are. One function which is essential for me with what I shoot is 100fps in 4k. My FS700 does that with my Odyssey7Q. Will the Eva1 be able to do this outputting to the Odyssey7Q? I know you mentioned 5.7k output will be available further down the road but will a 4k signal be possible from day 1 when it starts shipping and if so will 4k 100fps be possible? I love shooting on my Odyssey7Q into Prores so having the ability do this with my next camera is essential for me.

We are not sharing specific details of the RAW output, which will come later (not Day 1). But on first delivery the EVA1 will output 4K video over both SDI & HDMI. 4K up to 60p.

Not sure why so many people are complaining but I thought this is an amazing set of features.

Dual ISO? Amazing! Just like their Varicam line-up.
Mitch, what I don't understand is why is there a need to develop this new sensor specifically for the EVA1? Why not just use the one from the Varicam? Protecting the Varicam line-up? It would make it too good for the price? Consumes too much power?

A couple reasons. First, the VariCam sensor is very expensive to manufacture. It would have greatly raised the price of the camera. We were able to learn a bunch from the design & manufacture process on that sensor to develop the new 5.7K model. Second, the VariCam sensor uses a lot of power. We would have had to beef up the camera processing in order to handle the draw.

Thanks Mitch. Appreciate you taking the time to clarify some things here. I hope your relationship with Convergent Design means the Odyssey 7Q+ will be able to take the EVA1's RAW feed one day. That thing has been one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Mitch, I'm new to the forum but I've been lurking for awhile and think it's awesome that you interface with your consumers like this. One question for you:

Will EVA-1 have punch-in to check focus while recording? This is an essential feature for me and after scrutinizing images of the grip side I don't see where this functionality would go. Especially without a joystick control to move the window around.

There will be focus assist functions but I'm not sure of any details including magnify.
