EVA1: Panasonic AU-EVA1! Announcement and latest updates

Seems like some folks are conflating their emotional responses (annoyance and impatience) with objective "truths about the industry nowadays." No disrespect intended...but like... they're not. Once they release footage and production specs, no one will remember or care about how the presentation went on June 2, 2017 and how they didn't EVEN release any footage that day. Most folks I imagine will just take a look at the footage, research the specs, and make the decision that makes the most sense for them. Don't see too many people punish-buying C200s to teach panasonic a lesson about making them wait to see haha!

Personally this nerdy, only slight grasp of wow marketing is what I like about panasonic. I don't feel like I'm at the car dealership!

Anywho there's a first look (NO FOOTAGE) here: https://vimeo.com/220076198

Just what he already said but get a good look at how small it really is.

I talked to Mitch. No evf coming. I held it with a Sigma lense. Very light.

Would like to ask him about the logic behind not including an EVF. I do know some cameras don't come with them, but it just seems weird given where this one sits and that it's a Panasonic.

Sorry , but this sort of drips and drabs approach rarely works nowadays.
If I was in charge of marketing, I wouldn't make any announcement whatsoever until the thing was actually shipping to stores. But that's me -- and they're them, and they're the multibillion-dollar company who's been doing it for years, so -- I'm not telling you I prefer their method, I'm telling you that this is their established pattern.

The price in the UK will be close to 8,000 GBP inc VAT probably even more.
You don't know that. When the HVX200 was announced, it was said to be "under $10,000". It was -- it was $5,995. So you don't know what the EVA-1 will cost -- it might be 7,999 or it might be less. It is probably not accurate to assume that it will be more.

If you expect me to give you 8 grand or whathever amount under > I am sure it wont be less than 7500, I'd at least expect to see footage.
And when it's closer to the time when you can actually give them "under 8 grand", then I am certain you WILL see footage. But today is not that day. And you can't give them your money now, so -- no harm, no foul. They've previewed what they will be releasing in the fall. That's all they've done. They haven't taken anyone's money under false pretenses, they haven't pissed on anyone's leg and told them it's raining. They previewed what is coming out in three to six months. There will be more announcements and more reveals as the time of release draws closer.

I am not convinced at all that the EVA 1 will have any form of working AF that is anywhere near as close to that of your competitors- mainly Canon (whose DPAF is light years ahead of both Panasonic and Sony). Until you prove me wrong with actual hard evidence - as in footage from the camera, I'll gladly spend my money elsewhere.
Ain't my job to prove you wrong -- I'm not employed by Panasonic and I don't get a penny from any EVA-1 sales. You're of course free to spend your money anywhere you want. Panasonic will go about the business that they are in -- developing and releasing professional video cameras. If your timeframe and their product coincide, then hey, buy one. If they don't, then don't.

I just can't stand mischaracterizations, so I have been trying to point out what IS the reality -- not what we wish the reality was.

Barry, you need to channel your inner Mitch, like this, "It will focus." :)

I think any reasonable person would expect that it would autofocus. But NDA agreements prevent me from revealing what I do or don't know, or even whether I do or don't know it, other than what has been publicly revealed.

Now, for those who like to pixel-peep, they could look at this picture and see that the lens' AF/MF switch is set to AF. Does that mean it WILL autofocus? Can't say. But it's interesting to me that they chose to leave the switch in that position when they took the photo...

Which begs the follow up question....
Why EF mount?
DVXUser is working on getting some answers... We hope to have answers to common questions. If it was me, I certainly wouldn't have wanted EF mount, but -- seems everyone in the world has gone EF, BM supports EF, Red supports EF, Canon of course supports EF, so apparently Panasonic thought that was the most appropriate choice for this product at this price point.

To me the good thing about EF mount is that it's widely supported, inexpensive lenses are available, there's a plethora of them available for rent, there's even ENG-style lenses now, and it can at least be adapted to take manual Nikon lenses (which is what I have).

I would have wanted an interchangeable mount system. But I don't think most folks would have expected a dual-native ISO with both true VLog and V.Gamut at this price point either, with 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 internal and full 5.7k raw output. So I guess at some point they have to meet their targeted price point, and I guess an interchangeable lens mount wasn't practical for this particular camera at this time at this price point.

Announce it when its ready to show in a production or at least pre-pro model. WITH FOOTAGE.

Say what you will about Canon, but they have 1 - a fully functioning pre-pro models all over the UK. 2 - Footage shot with the C200. 3 - FULL SPEC SHEET - 4. REALISTIC And CONCRETE Time for delivery - August.

Corporate lingo live - preview, pre-release, pre-launch is too vague and does not inspire confidence at all. RED had so many problems promising and announcing stuff before it was ready, but they learned their lesson - dont announce anything before it is absolutely ready to go.

Even Blackmagic finally learned their lesson with URSA Mini Pro: when they announced it, it was immediately available.

I have used mainly panasonic cameras for the past five years but what a weird name for this camera, whoever named this camera has no clue about marketing, why can't you keep it simple and keep the varicam brand outfront and maybe call it Varicam Mini Pro, that would have a greater appeal and generate more interest in the camera. This was Panasonic's first and biggest mistake calling it the AU-EVA 1, nothing catchy whatsoever.

I can kind of, sort of see their logic because the sensor is different from the Varicams. AU-EVA 1 is atrocious, EVA 1 not much better, but Panasonic Eva? I think it would have worked.

Well, if you attach any sort of Varicam name to it, it WOULD have to live up to the Varicam line/brand/expectation. Yes, they tossed lots of varicam keywords in there but that doesn't mean you're getting a Varicam.

...he explains the choice not to include EVF. I don't agree with it, but at least I get their logic now.

This is only an opinion, but "awkward" or not, it's absolutely usable in that position and I couldn't be happier having one. A purchase like this becomes usability now as well, while I want the best imagery, I can't produce that without having the proper tool to begin with. While I can kit this out with an EVF, I honestly want everything to be natively supported by the manufacture. This might sound nit picky, but the camera not being equipped with this feature would heavily weigh on my decision to purchase one. As it stands both cameras are a far off purchase as I'd likely need at minimum two but this hurt the ability to have two options instead of one.

All in all the feature set sounds great, personally I would have welcomed the color science of the Panasonic if it mimic'd the Varicam. It's a good time to be a filmmaker now that we are getting new options though, the future looks bright.

Well, considering the competition is named "C200" and "FS5", is it really all that big a mistake? I don't think "C200" is any catchier than "Eva".

Regardless, the name certainly struck me as odd. I think what they're going for is they want people to call it the "Eva", just like folks refer to the "Alexa". And if that catches on, it should be fine.
