GH2 Panasonic announces upcoming firmware update for GH2 !

IF the MP4 theory is correct,

after checking the GX1 specs...
it has
1080i with 30p in avchd
1080p with 30p in mp4
since pretty much all the AVCHD mode has a mp4 counterpart...
theres a chance of a 1080 60p there since gh2 records in avchd 1080 60i with 60frames =)

but i sure hope they're smart enough to actually do that. 24p, 25p, 50p, 60p

Out of curiosity given the same bit rate what are (if any) advantages of .mp4 files over .mt2 if its still AVCHD

Thanks in advance
John

I'm wondering the same thing. Perhaps compatibility? I know Adobe Bridge can read/play mts files natively. Perhaps .mp4 it can.

I've noticed no editing advantages either way between MP4 and AVCHD. Both basically h.264 / AVC, just in different containers.

AVCHD requires fat32 file system (i.e. : file spanning > 4GB : big issue for the huge bitrate hacks (Gop1) who stop the recording when this limit is reached)

Mp4 container can handle ExFat file system (no spanning needed) : we can use sdxc cards (ExFat) without spanning issue anymore. Good way to use intra-frame patches on cards that can theorically go up to 2To (currently the max capacity of available cards is 128G, i believe) : sweet. :-)

The only thing AVCHD gets you is some standards... which are really just becoming bigger limitations as time goes on. Plus, the folder/file structure is nothing short of annoying.

Moving outside of that realm could really open doors. Higher bitrates, new frame-rates, bigger files, per-frame meta data, uniquely numbered files (gasp), and other goodies could become possible. Of course all at the cost of potential compatibility issues. Simple solution; offer both modes so the software has time to catch up.

My guess on the editable mode would be the current 24mbps version without B-frames for people with crappy computers. If they were going to offer a new frame-rate, it wouldn't be wise to wait another month to announce. I'm happy to take a surprise though.

Media Composer may be expensive, but it is rock-solid, well supported, and can handle any framerate you could possibly want from it.

Well at least it guaranteed to include 25p from Panasonic's Product Specialist Mac Berggren:
En ersättare till GH är självklart planerad men tyvärr inget jag kan berätta om. Dock har vi nyligen släppt en uppdatering av GH2 mjukvara med mycket som varit efterfrågat av våra användare bla 25p i film.
Google translate from swedish:
A replacement for GH is obviously planned but unfortunately nothing I can tell you about. However, we recently released an update of GH2 software with a lot of that has been requested by our users such as 25p in the movie.

Question:

I have a hacked GH2 that I use with both PAL and NTSC framerates. But I bought the camera in the US, so it's a NTSC model originally.

If I update the firmware (when released) is there any chance my NTSC GH2 will have 25p? Or only PAL GH2s?

I think I know the answer ...

xocomil: I guess when you update the firmware, you'll get a clean firmware: NTSC or PAL version, but not both at the same time. You'll need a new ptools release based in new firmware.

Why not? It's not like it would be revolutionary. It's more like manufacturers are holding back on already build-in tech, no? It would certainly boost sales.

Sure, but then why would people buy an af100?
It really sucks that they have to protect all their product lines from each other.... it makes me sad that a little tweek in the software could make this camera into the beast it should have been...

Does anyone have a spare $50million to buy out Olympus Imaging? ($50million is just a guess)
Imagine making the camera everyone wanted to have at the price that people want it at... that is power!! you could take down every company that makes a video dslr or high end cam corder... The possibilities are endless

That will NEVER happen here. Those specs are for "professional" gear that costs a heck of a lot more. This camera is a "consumer" camera coming out of the "consumer" division of Panasonic.

But I've read it's geared towards consumer HD cameras, at least that's what some Panasonic source said, it was vague though...let me see if I can find it.
