Panasonic announces availability of 14-140 lens firmware update

Might be great if anyone has the time to do a before and after firmware comparison video. I will try to do one myself beforehand... :)

I found this on the DP Review site. Here's the link to the update from Panasonics website

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/index2.html

What would be the best way to update the lens with a hacked GH1?

My feeling is to put Panasonics 1.32 back on, then update the lens. Then put the hack back on.

all the best

I don't think you need to do that. The update affects the firmare in the lens using the camera's software just as the utility to accomplish it. This means the camera's firmaware version is totally irrelevant.

Should work the same for folks with firmware 1.34 - lens updates are different than body updates.

As to the OP I was able to apply the 14-140 lens update using a hacked GH1 with no problem and am still able to apply hacked version updates to the same camera.

Should, but we need a confirmation. Because if lens updates goes through then the file must contain some code that allows it to take place using new update procedures. Unless of course lens updates are handled by totally separate procedures than body updates.

Ok, thanks for testing and confirming. This should prevent the question of whether body firmware v1.34 is backdoor-installed from being asked (let's hope) :)

P.S. Do you see any obvious improvements in autofocus performance in stills and or video mode?

I have never done a lens update... Are you saying that if I have the hack installed and I update the lens then I will still be able to keep the hack?

EDIT: Sorry... missed this... but still can someone second this??? I really don't want to lose the hack!

I just installed the lens update on my un-hacked GH1. The update worked A-OK and although I have no way to measure it the auto-focus does seem quicker - noticeably quicker actually.

Note that the binary file for the lens update is named ES100313.lin; it does not have the .bin extension mentioned in the instructions. I expect the l (letter that comes after k) is for "lens" and the b in .bin is for "body."

Thanks for the focusing comment bit - I had not used my 14-140 in some time and was not sure if the update made any difference.

One thing that I did notice right away, I have been using the Panny 25mm 4/3 recently which is a noisy lens during AF. The 14-140 is near silent in comparison and much faster to AF!

I now have body v0.0 and lens 1.3 (14-140)

It was body v0.0, lens v1.2 so it appears hacked body will update the lens.

.bin typically stands for binary, many firmwares for all different kinds of devices (not just cameras) come in a .bin format. I'm guessing .lin is just their own designation, maybe standing for lens binary?

You people are either brave or crazy! Thanks for testing the lens update on the GH13

I shall update today.

No doubt all our cameras will now be GPS tracked when using the new lens update and we will be knocked off one by one for installing the hack.

all the best

has anyone applied the lens update and then tried a firmware update after? just ruling out all possibilities..ha

i heard a rumor VITALIY KISELEV was actually KYLE REESE from the terminator movies!
