Panasonic has added the AV-HS400 to its line of multiformat video switchers.

The HS400 integrates into existing HD/SD workflows and mixes HD and SD video sources. The new switcher also includes a built-in multiviewer preview, an expandable HD/SD architecture, 3-D digital effects and chroma key.

Looks like they are really stepping up the ante for low-cost HD video switchers. That multiviewer alone is worth most of the price of the unit, oh yeah and it's a switcher too. :)

Reminds me of the control panel in the transporter room on the original Star Trek.

You mention it being low cost, but that the one feature alone is almost worth the price. Sounds like a good amount of bang for the buck.

What would a comparable unit be, and how much would it cost?

Well, for example Miranda's Kaleido-Alto-HD 10 input multi-image processor (split screen monitoring system) alone lists for about $10k. Of course the Miranda does have clock generation, signal probing, too, etc .. but those arn't often key features.

Monitoring 10 HD-SDI sources doesn't come cheap.

And feature wise this unit appears to far beat the competing Focus HX-2 unit for example .. which costs $20k.

If you are shooting 24p or (especially) 30p, it'll work fine, even if it's switching 1080i, as that's how the "p" streams are carried.

I know its an old thread, but now that I've got one of these I thought I'd bring it back. So far, I'm absolutely thrilled with it. Although its kinda a 1me switcher - you can somewhat effectively switch cams on prog/preview with it all the while running a PIP, DSK, and linear key. So for my uses, it really functions as a 2ME switcher. The Multiview really makes setup a breeze too. I put together a rough "flypack" setup in about 2 hours with 7 sources. Normally that would take me about 6 hours. The multiview setup really keeps the cabling clean and simple. If it was up to me, I'd be selling our other 3 switchers tomorrow and getting more of these.

Yeah I just wanted to chime in too. This is a slick unit, I switched between an hpx500, xl h1 and xh g1 and let me tell you this thing pulls a mean key, even no lighting! Use two kinos and you're golden. It's a beautiful unit!

Hi folks

We've been looking for a small format HD / SD-SDI production switcher to accomodate 720P and 480i equipment.

While we're waiting to get a demo to try, I was wondering if anyone is mixing 480i and 720P input source material. The specs indicate "480/59.94i" meaning a double frame rate as opposed to 480i/29.97. Is this real or an error in their literature?

thanks

Michael
