Panasonic announces aj-hpx3100 p2 hd camcorder

This is a great price but I can't believe it does not have 720p modes. Just seems like there is always a catch since we entered the HD era.
None of the 1920x1080 CCD models in the Panasonic lineup have 720p mode. Not the HPX3000, 3100, or 3700. They're all 1080-only.

Where does this leave the HPX-2100 in the line? Maybe by default the HPX-2100 will be the HPX-500's successor!
Well, interesting question, because at $19,950 it puts the 3100 firmly ahead of the 2100 in just about all ways. Yes there's only two slots instead of five, but ... we're not exactly dealing with 4gb cards anymore, so does that really matter to folks?

The HPX2000 has the obvious choice of going to 720p, which the 3100 doesn't do. But I'd think that for most folks, the 3100 is going to end up replacing the 3000 and the 2000.

and the street price could be even lower, right?
Certainly possible. These aren't sold at B&H so I don't know where someone could find out what the street price really is, unless you've got the dough to actually negotiate the deal. Then a dealer like, say, Abel should be able to hook you up.

The 3100 also does DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV so you are covered for SD work as well. I'm not sure what the in-camera down-rez quality is like. When I tested the HPX3000 years ago in SD, it seemed to aliase a fair bit. Maybe a 3000-user could pipe in here?

Great news, but that price wouldn't include the viewfinder, I suppose.
Still, $10,000 cheaper than what I was expecting. I wouldn't be surprised if the street price will end up being in the $17,000 range. That's a heckuva lot of camera for that price.

I think lens and external mic are extra too. Not sure though.

I'm surprised they didn't come out with a 2/3" CMOS for under 20K.
