Hey guys, I'm sure this has been posted already but I wanted a few specifics.
I'm getting a DVX100B to make my short films. besides everything thats loaded onto it when I pull it out of the box including the mic. is there anything else that anyone would advise me to get? i've got alittle over 5 grand. I need a tripod I know.. those are expensive also, but I just need to have nice crisp audio and good shots.. so anything would be appreciated if you have any input. thanks

If you want nice crisp audio read the stickies in the audio forum. Would strongly consider putting the mic on a boom. Getting the mic in close to the source is one of the biggest keys to good audio.

Still new at all this but this is what I bought along with my camera:

Sennheiser 416 shotgun with boom (mic alone is $1200)
A fuzzy mic cover of good quality (A MUST if you are filming outdoors otherwise any breeze will kill your audio!)
Manfrotto tripod (a good one) and fluid head ($800 or so)
2 lavalier SENN ($1000)
1 field mixer Sure SP33 (not sure about the model letters) used $700
2 OMNI light Lowell to go with hard case ($800) and GLOVES ;)
A backpack to carry my camera

You definitely want a clear UV filter to protect your lense and prevent it from getting scratched (cheap I think like $40 or so)

Stuff to clean lense - A MUST

I also have a figrig for those cool run and gun impossible shots :)
Oh and I also have a mini cadi for smooth dolly moves on a minuscule budget (works pretty darn good!)

One thing I wuld not cut corners on is the tripod. Make sure you get a good one, that goes low if need be and that is very stable. make sure the fluid head moves smoothly. That is the only way you are going to get a look close to film when panning. So don't get a $300 tripod.

Hope that helps, still learning myself and working on my very first film

Here is a couple shots of a recent shoot on the dry lake, you can see my DVX100 and the cady and the SENN416 mounted on the camera (there was no dialogues in that scene)

Here is another shot showing how I did a traveling shot emerging from behind a 1928 hotrod to see the entire group of cars

And here is my tripod , heavy enough to resist heavy winds encountered on the dry lake

And PS: It was 115F that day and this scene was shot at 11:30 AM (OUCH!)

Thanks guys this helps alot. any Tripod suggestions? I would like to get a good one one cheap also..

good and cheap dont really come together. Based on reviews the 503 is the best/cheapest you can get away with. I'm using a libec ls38 head on miller solo sticks that I like a whole lot - think the whole package was 700-800 or so.

Deuce - I like your little dolly - is that a commercial piece or something you built? Nice setup by the way. Looks like you got some nice equipment.

Commercial built, costs I think around $250 if I remember right? Does not come with head. Worth every penny. I put a little head on there for about $70, make sure to pick a head that can pivot though! It can attach itself to the Bogen head too, but that takes longer, so if youare in hurry 9run and gun - stealing the shots etc...) having it's own little head might be a good idea

VERY portable HAHA! On smooth surface like linoleum you could dolly the whole length of room. if outdoors, you will need to bring a plank of SMOOTH wood like I did on photos above, then you are limited travel wise to the length of plank. Indoors you can use any table, counter top, as long as smooth.

deuceofspades (also know in my world as "the good two"!)

thanks for the detailed info on the wheeled "thingy".

care to shoot a close-up so all of us could drool?

care to post a wee-bit of footage of a move with the wheeled-thingy doing its thing?

thanks in advance

be well
