Thought you guys might like to see this footage, if you haven't already.

The title of this thread is the title of Filippo's posted clip.

Be warned, the video is heavily processed.

Personally, I would like to see unprocessed footage for a better representation of what the AF100 offers.

Nice piece. We can't really judge anything about the ultimate quality of imagery from the AF100 yet, but I am seeing in general rather limited dynamic range as far as deep shadows are concerned, about on par with the 7D video mode at first glance. Shadows block up pretty quickly.

DR looks quite a bit better than 7D in certain shots.... I think they have crushed the blacks as part of their color correction (and added the strange blur).

Looks decent.

I wish we could have seen the footage without the white glow and the desaturation.

The skew looks slightly better than the 7D. At 1:05 you can see the handheld with a tighter lens is doing a decent job ( guessing its around a 50mm lens there? )

The whites on his shirt seem to blow out rather harshly, is this due to the color correction or compression in camera?

I'd like to see more un-graded footage. I'm not judging the camera or it's abilities at all yet, I'm just not a fan of the DP or colorist at all.

The whites were blown out to hell, the color palate and color grade weren't attractive to me and the blacks seemed very crushed.

Remember, the camera is just a machine. The real camera ability always exists in the shooter.

On other things, I liked the quality of the vimeo export via nanoflash.

Philip Bloom is gonna have one of the prototypes this week. I'm excited to see what he comes up with.

They pretty clearly applied a standard Magic Bullet Looks filter over the whole thing, probably the Max Contrast option. The blown out whites, the extremely crushed blacks, the slight glow and even the specific color cast are signature giveaways of this. Some filmmakers use this when they want to go in a faux-Robert Richardson/Janusz Kaminski direction, but they shouldn't have graded a first test with these kind of severe tools (if at all).

Have to agree that I'm not a fan of the look either. Not a good representation of the cam based on the other stuff I've seen.

I really wish people wouldn't use such sensationalist titles for their threads. It's not AF100 test footage when it's this processed. Ultimately we all would like to see unprocessed footage as noted many times over the past couple of days. But this is pretty far over the line.

For example, tons of banding showing up but we can't know how well the footage was processed in post. Drawing any conclusions related to the camera from this is impossible and should probably be avoided.

Sensationalist title?

I didn't tout it as some great piece of work which merits high praise and commendation.

It's just a clip available on Vimeo for all to see. You should judge the clip, not the messenger.

It's the name of the clip. I don't know the guy who shot it. I found it on Vimeo. This thread title is his video title. I'm not going to change the name of his clip...

From Vimeo: Panasonic AG-AF100 first release test

No caps, no "TEST FOOTAGE"

Way to update the first post... but still not with his title. In fact, I'd say the Vimeo post clearly states he was testing the camera. It was not posted as "TEST FOOTAGE" and nowhere does he claim as much.

You mean aside from when the guy labeled his video "...first release test"?

First release test and "TEST FOOTAGE" are significantly and semantically quite different.

There can, at this point with a pre-release product, be a big difference between testing a camera and posting what the filmmaking community considers to be "test footage". I was merely stating that the video was not posted for pixel-peeping "test footage" and is far too processed to be considered as such.

Just like the thread that tried to call Jan out on a now outdated comment regarding DVCProHD and AVCCAM, there has been a rash of sensationalist reporting and thread titles. This is not test footage. It may be a test production, it may be a first release test, but it is not TEST FOOTAGE that aims to decisively evaluate the imaging capabilities of the camera. I'm not even saying the OP claimed as much, but the thread title is misleading.

People get the wrong ideas very quickly in this day and age and I am simply trying to help users understand not to take the title of the thread or the footage itself to heart since no viable facts about the footage the AF-100 produces can be obtained from that short.

How verbose do I need to be about this?

lol, test footage like this makes me very queezy about having pre ordered the camera, but then i remembered that there is nothing about the footage that i like, so chances are it's not the camera. :P

Go phil bloom go!

I agree-to label this clip as TEST FOOTAGE is misleading. This is simply a short film story shot on the AF100. With TEST FOOTAGE, I expect a series of test images and some data to go with it.

I am AMAZED at the people chosen to shoot with these cameras, prior to them being brought to market. It seems as if random vimeo users are selected and given the camera and told have fun.

I know I'm not the only one thinking this, or am I?
