Panasonic AF-100 being called the "DSLR killer". Any thoughts?

It's been over a year since this stuff happened. I'm not saying it won't, the point is that this "kill" thing is really silly.

Gear doesn't have emotions nor does it have a heartbeat. People proclaiming the second coming of the apocalypse is definitely odd.

Nothing's going to kill anything, people will use whatever gear they see fit and hopefully find great results along with it.

Like I said, there IS a 35mm Adapter feature film hitting theaters this month. I'd see that as a sign of life, if inanimate objects actually have a pulse.

Correct me if I'm wrong but by the way you speak you make it SEEM as if it's not possibly for a film shot on DSLR to make it big? To my understanding there have been films released nationally with a lesser capable camera.

I think no one is denying that a Red, Ex1, Af-100, etc are probably better tools for the job than a DSLR, but if I make a film on a DSLR I know with the proper story and content it can make it.

So please everyone calm down and understand that DSLRs while not the best and probably very bad for many applications do in fact at many time provide an amazing image. So judging by that video I posted and many people who have seen it projected on a large screen can attest that in the "proper" hands these DSLRS can and do deliver an incredible image.

Can't wait to get my hands on a AF100

The idea is that DSLRs or any other camera are NOT killing anything else.

If someone happens to make a good movie that's marketable and looks great on a DSLR then that's what counts.

If someone happens to make a good movie that's marketable and looks great on an iPhone 4 that's what counts.

I got four bloody scenes left. 72 min. but on a GH13!!!! no mirror, not a DSLR.

humpf

:)

That said in all jest, in all seriousness, to back kholi up (i hope) it's all about the emotional detachment during the work. One year into it I was stressing over the tech. Then we got a good take. Like a really good, long take. There was some noise, just in the shadows, couldn't see and patterns or banding, but there was noise. The footage was a bit shaky, but damn the actors nailed it.

And that did it. Nobody on set said they needed anything, and it's been another year. Just made work go faster. The only ppl that are catching all this are dp's i show the film to. If they're young, they nitpick, if they're over 60 (for the most part) they're enjoying the scene and tell me not to stress.

Light is something I'd rather worry about. The actors. The topic. Like the man who scribbles said, 'marketable film' shot on whatever.

One should worry about the film. And really, if no one notices, or asks, how it was shot, and they're in, you did it.

DSLR's have taught me that it is plausible (not feasible maybe) to shoot with anything.

Cheers all...

*cough*theGH2issweet*cough* :) (had to)

Excellent post, thank you.

Also I did not know that the Canon 5d was used for some scenes in Iron Man 2

Good link. Interesting that ASC Libatique DP of Iron Man feels that..

If I were shooting an indy film of any narrative length, I would probably choose to shoot it with the 5D Mark II, as opposed to one of the small HD video cameras offered by various manufacturers.

It's also interesting that with all of the imaging flaws that are inherent in the 5DII that it is now approved by the BBC on a case by case basis despite failing so badly on their initial test that they wouldn't even test it any further, but it's now approved (case by case) because it just looks so damn good. LOL

I'm looking forward to the AF100 not only because of the image quality but because audio is just such a pain in the ass on DSLRs. I really dearly would love to be able to monitor audio and see the levels as it is being recorded. I'm really hoping that the AF100 will have everything we love about the 5DII image quality with all of the much needed other improvements it's going to come with.

I'm not sure anything is going to kill a camera that has image quality that more than a few ASC DPs feel is comparable to 35mm film.

As far as a feature that has almost entirely been shot by a DSLR. Acts of Valor is coming unless something has happened I'm not aware of.

Here's an option, and taking into account syncing sound is easy in FCP with PluralEyes. So no pain in the ass there.

So let's see, I'm going to use the 7D as an example, my prices are just estimates and ought not to be taken as fact. Dollars are CAD.

7D = $1800
H4N= $359
hdmi to sdi=$625
Zacuto EVF=700
timecode generator=$525
anti-moire filter =$125
ViewFactor Powered Cage = $1100
=$5234

You could substitute the 7d for the Pany GH2 if you wanted.
There are pros and cons depending on whether you also want to do DSLR timelapse or AF100 timelapse. More cords to take care of with a DSLR, but the ViewFactor cage allows you to power everything with a single or (hotswap setup) V-mount or Anton Bauer.

With the Zacuto EVF you will get Focus Assist and Exposure Assist.

Personally I am interested in the greater range the AF100 will have with blacks and highlights. Another pro for me is that if I need to I can get a PL mount kit for $1000 that isn't permanent. I'm sure my rental shop will carry that which adds more convenience.

I find myself leaning towards the AF100 but by no means is it an easy decision. As Spock would say, "Logically than if the decision is difficult the Af100 is not killing the DSLR but just a different option". or something like that, you get the picture, message, etc...

Just watched this $999 GL2 video 1080p and it looks like there is a bit of moire on the buildings on the left? Maybe it has something to do with it being SloMotion?

Do you mean GH2? Of course the GH2 will have moire, it's a DSLR-type camera and they all have it. The big difference is that the Canons have the purple/orange rainbow moire, whereas the GH1/GH2 and the Nikons and Pentaxes have just black & white/luminance moire.

The AF100 doesn't have any moire at all.

Well.. what does he know.. he's only a ASC member . I just hope Canon takes a major leap forward in terms of the video capabilities with the Mark III or whatever its called.

Caring about what camera was used to shoot background plates for VFX shots is like caring about what brand of sandbag kept the lights from falling over.

I'd want to know! :) I actually asked at another production what brand sand bags they were using because they were so nice. Bought myself a whole bunch of them!

:)

Or you caring to be a known and proven Panasonic Fanboy just disgust me. Please stop with such an not welcome post & read the story behind why that camera was used. I guess your a little mad that a Gh1 was not used .......

Wow I look super young in those. That defense got a little more personal that I wanted, but so was the attack...and one's in violation of forum rules and the other isn't so, whatever.

Anyway, I appreciate the personal attack...actually, not so much. I am happy to use whatever camera is going to work best for the particular project and whatever I have access to at any given point. I'll shoot on Canon, Sony, Panasonic, whatever. I prefer shooting on a GH1, but I also prefer shooting on the HVX-200 to the Sony EX1 but will still choose the EX1 when I feel that the look it provides is a necessity. I'd be happy to provide pictures of that too if it's necessary. Hoping to have some AF-100 one's soon too.

I think it's great that professionals are using DSLRs and other digital cameras within the reach of the common person, but I'm more excited when they're used for actual work that shows off how good their image quality is, such as when that House finale was shot on the 5D...rather than just for being small and inexpensive, such as with Public Enemies using the EX1 for in-car shots, or Lucasfilm using Canon DSLRs for cockpit shots, or the GH1 on Human Target or the 5D for Ironman and 24...using footage that's barely on screen and that barely registers with the viewer doesn't excite me...using them as the 'A' camera does.

Pictures don't fool anyone when we can all look at your post history and see what your all about. Secondly if you wouldn't have made that comment then I would have not made mine.

It's like someone wanting to start a fight and then goes and gets mad when he gets it and calls the police. Truth is I understand what you mean, but your initial post did not show that. as a matter of fact just going to the gh1 forums shows a lot of people who think just like you do.

So with that said stop dry snitching and handle things like a man /

Firstly, as far as I know the post history only goes back about 200 posts (and if you looked through them all, and I'm flattered if you did, you'd see that I am active in various areas of the site including the Canon forum where I try to share my knowledge and offer my opinion when I think it would be helpful, particularly when it comes to post-production workflow and things like lenses, rigs, etc) and I've contributed about 2,800 to this community, so I am not sure if you're getting the best possible sample size...particularly given that around 2,600 of them were made before you were a member of the site (welcome by the way, always nice to have new people!)

Secondly, I am not really sure what your particular objection to my comment was...I would've made it about any camera and I'm sure I have made similar comments in the past (see earlier example of the EX1 for Public Enemies, or the Canons for Red Tails, or the GH1 for Human Target.)

Thirdly, you telling me to "be a man" is somewhat hypocritical coming from someone who is making personal attacks against someone on the internet rather than contributing to the discourse in a productive (or at least amusing) manner. We could keep going back and forth like this until the mods come in and smack it down (are they asleep or something?) but I'd rather handle it 'like men' and not have to resort to that. You can apologize to me and I'll forgive you and we can just get on with our lives. Sound good?

By the way Ben, I really liked your iKan submission. The difference between the first and second part was awesome.

What was the first horrible part shot on? The aliasing on the blinds is HORRIBLE x 100
