Panasonic 4K GH4 possibly coming next Spring...

Looking good! Two questions:

Why can't they, or haven't they, made this in the AF100 or traditional video camera form when it's obvious main focus is video?

And would it ever be possible to add a power zoom lens to M43 cameras like you can to APS-C cameras (when using Sony's 18-105 f/4 E-Mount Power variable speed Zoom lens)?

I think going all out with a small form factor carves a better niche for themselves in the market, like what Blackmagic has done. A 4K AF100 has to compete against the next generation of Canon's C line on one end and Sony on the other, all while having a sensor size disadvantage. At least this way they've got its small size and use for stills photogs as a selling point, but I don't think they have faith an MFT video camera of that sort can really compete in this market. Plus they're not undercutting any cameras this way, they can concentrate on the best 'DSLR' form factor video camera without worrying about stealing sales from themselves.

I'd still prefer this sensor and electronics in a proper video camera body, like the AF100. That way, you could have ND filters and you wouldn't need that interface base. It'd give the Sony AX1 and Z100 a run for their money.
We know for sure the sensor would fit into an AF100.

The external attachment also adds an external time control that allows for multiple cameras to synchronise time codes for simultaneous recording! This is huge. Not genlockmbut but still a step in the right direction.

The SDIs let you use it with switchers, and the time code lets you use it in multicam unswitched environments.

That combination is enough for our team to consider moving over from our other sets of paired cameras, as almost all of our work is multicam shoots. This truly pushes the camera into a new league.

It will not mean much to most shooters, but this is a huge price breakthrough for those who shoot with switchers and/or multicam unswitched.

Now has the DR been improved significantly?

If those product photos are correct, the body/control/etc similarities with the GH3 make me wonder if the XLR attachment might be compatible with the GH3 as well

This is turning out very intriguing... comparing even a conservative speculation on the leaked camera data and extrapolation from the GH3 image, it's size, its price, framerates, bitrates, the relative sensibility of the XLR doohickey placement vs. some ludicrous hotshoe-mounted hand/pod abomination... there's a chance this could match favorably head-to-head with even the Canon C-series (yes, all the way to the 500). My AF100 has been decidedly less cantankerous lately... maybe it's concerned about its job security?

The pessimist in me is of course nearly certain there's some fatal flaw of the entire design that makes it not a true competitor to Canon's ~$20K flagship cinema camera, but heck, I've been pleasantly surprised a time or two

I'd prefer it as well... cutting my teeth on shoulder mount cameras, I'm used to simply turning a dial or flipping a switch on the side instead of digging through a menu. Even if it isn't that particular form factor, being big enough to have an external ND wheel and switches for basic stuff is going to be a big selling point to some folks.

A website leaked the Panasonic GH4 images for a short time (I am not going ti unveil the site name to see if I can find more info soon). The specs are- 16,05 Megapixel sensor. It’s a new sensor with semi-conductor protection tech to reduce noise and improved dynamic range.
- quad core processor and venus Engine
- ISO up to 25,600.
- 12fps, 7,5 fps with continuous focusing
- GH4 uses the new UHS I class III SD card format
- Depth From Defocusing (uses Panasonic lens database to fine tune AF!)
- AF as fast as 0.07 seconds. 49 AF points.
- 4K video at 4096×2160 pixels and max frame rate of 96fps.
- Bit rate of up to 200Mbp
- Magnesium body
- Price not unveiled yet
- There is an optional Interface Unit (see image below). Has 2 XLR, 4 SDI, micro HDMi output, color bar signal, audio reference signal, external time control
The camera will be announced tomorrow (Friday Feb 7) at 4am London time! You can follow the announcement live here on 43rumors!

I would love it if they made an extension cable so that the XLR/SDI adapter doesn't have to be mounted below GH4 and I could keep using my GH3 cage.

It says GH4 on it, yet Panasonic has skipped the number 4 in their other M43 cameras. Is this a change of philosophy or are these somehow doctored images?

I'm also a tad skeptical about that adapter picture. Doesn't look like you can tilt the LCD to face all the way up with it on there.

Question... why 4 SDI ports? If two 3G-SDI ports is all that's needed for uncompressed 4k, why the extra two? Or am I just really off in my (very limited) understanding of 4k transmission?

Let's hope the adapter is faked and they have one that is designed to fit like a battery grip. Would be much more ergonomic.

Honestly I'd be fine with a single phantom powered XLR jack on a vertical grip style adapter so long as you can still use the 1/8" mic jack as well. But if Panasonic is buidling an adapter for this at all, it's a win.
