Panasonic 3D Lens for GH1/M43 Cameras!

I'm hoping that panasonic or other m4/3 or SLR manufacturers start developing more 3D lenses and hopefully lenses with manual control of interoccular AND convergence.

We are still limited with squeezed (portrait) 3D format. Some larger interocular distance can be achieved with the following:

However, I am not sure about the quality.

Better solution would be using two GH1 and synching them (to be in the same video "phase") through some of available ports. Even better would be additional transfer of commands from "master" to "slave" camera (e.g. menu button, ISO, front wheel, etc.).

This lens:

... shows an ocular distance closer to that of the human eye, so that should feel more natural, but I can't imagine that the glass is of extremely high quality, hope I'm wrong.

I'd actually like to try one out on the gh1.
I have the Loreo 3D lens and it does work as advertised, though it's limited to F11 or F22. Loreo provides simple fold-out viewers that converge the two images into a single 3D image in the center of your field of view. With practice, you may also be able to cross your eyes enough to converge the side-by-side images without assistance.

Could you, please, post one or two pictures? I'd like to see results, if possible.

I know very-well how to converge the eyes (for parallel or x-views), since I have some experience in stereoscopy. Namely, I managed to make some synchronizers for cameras and camcorders (not GH1, yet). Few years ago I was involved in development of StereoData Maker (CHDK branch) Canon firmware for making highly synchronised pictures. :)

I like your suggestion of syncing two gh1s.

I also thought of just cropping in to get 4/3 or 16/9 back, sure we'll end up with 1/4 res but still, it's 3D! =)

BTW that'll be 960x540 for FHD and 640x360 in SH, and at 4/3 SH gives 640x480.

Not too shabby if you ask me. =)

I can see how easy it is to get sidetracked on these forums.

Ideally though, one would want to get hold of an anamorphic lens, on which this "lens-in-a-cap" will fit, so that you keep all the vertical res but squeeze some more into the horizontal ... and I see they sell some other formats as well e.g. "full-frame" & "APS-C" from their own shop http://www.loreo.com/pages/shop/loreo_products_online.html ... hmmm.

And here is a really great (and relatively cheap) solution for video reference (playback, not live): http://www.zalman.co.kr/Eng/product/Product_Read.asp?Idx=391 it's around $400, we use this in our studio and it works really well. It comes with a free (30 day trial) version of this player: http://www.3dtv.at/Index_en.aspx - which accepts the side-by-side format and will do the "integration" work for you, all you'll see is your AWESOME 3D movies playing back on your Zalman right in front of your eyes. =)

Obviously if you use it as your current setup allows, your picture will be a bit stretched, but I think if you experiment with the cropping a bit you might have a winner on your hands.

While that would work in principle, you'd need two matched X2 anamorphic adapters, one attached to each of the two filter mounts on the Loreo 3D dual lens. It would likely be more practical to build the anamorphics into the 3D lens itself...

The Loreo 3D lens is fun, though I don't really have a use for it at the moment. If anyone wants to take it off my hands for half price, send me an IM.

Wow... things just get kookier and kookier....

4k on youtube...

3D on the GH1 and others cams... when 90% of people dont even watch HD now or have a 1920 1080p monitor as it is...

In my opinion, the processing will not be difficult at all. Some guys may write a small video player software which process the side-by-side 3D-image by cutting the 2 halves of the image then synthesize them into 3D format.

I wish the 3D lens could also be applied on our GH1 !
