Pana what you see is what you get hack?

Hi,

I´ve been toying with the idea of getting a GH camera to do some video work but one thing that has always bothered me was the fact that when you look at the lcd you don´t see the actual final footage you´re shooting, you have to guide your self via panasonic´s graphic exposure values. Is there a hack to change this? I mean, when I close the lenss´diaphram I want to see the image getting darker, I don´t want to see minus 1 or whatever. On a regular camcorder what you see on the lcd is what you get, and that is what I want from the GH series. Is this possible via hack?

cheers

Rafa

I'm not sure if you got this impression from the way the GH1's still photography mode works, but in video mode, all Panasonic GH, GF, G, and GX cameras show you exactly what is being recorded on both the LCD and EVF screens. In addition, the GH2 can be set up with its "Constant Preview" menu option to do this in still photography mode as well. There is no need for a hack to make use of these standard features.

Not a problem on the GH2
Seriously? It's one of my biggest problems with the GH2... to a point.

Prior to hitting record, the EVF/LCD is only giving you a close approximation of what it's going to record... and then changes either gamma or tint or both once you press the pickle switch. Taking stills, it's even worse (or perhaps I just suck with the stills mode). The issue is exacerbated in low light/high ISO situations... in good outdoor daylight, it's essentially WYSIWYG.

The EVF/LCD is also not of a suitable resolution to show you how much noise it's really putting into your image. I could see all the sparkles when shooting at high gain with my HVX, and knew I was going to be getting noisy imagery... but the GH2 seems to smooth the noise on the EVF/LCD... I've shot a couple of times at low light, marvelling at the sensitivity and cleanliness of what I was seeing, only to come back and find multicolored munge all over the images.

My general rule of thumb when shooting anything serious with the GH2 is to get exposure, roll a few seconds to see what I'm actually recording, and then adjust appropriately.

Please read the post I was replying to. It has nothing to do with Gamma shift and more to do with the expectation that you can't see the image darken or lighten when you open and close the iris. You get live view on the GH no hack needed.

Now if you want to make the thread about something else then that is fine but that wasn't what I was responding about.

I find I can see the noise just fine in the EVF. Admitedly the LCD is crap and I don't usually use it to shoot. You are right the Gamma shift is an issue I would love to see fixed. It didn't look as bad in the 1.1 firmware but maybe that is just placebo.

I did read the post, thanks.

I think the poster's issue has to do with:
a) shooting video in something other than manual movie mode
b) not having Constant Preview enabled

While you CAN shoot video in the various stills modes, you do get the exact behavior he's talking about when you're not recording... it isn't WYSIWYG.

Switching on Constant Preview and switching to Movie Mode do help get it closer to WYSIWYG, but it's still not EXACTLY that until you hit record. Once you hit record, sure, you're about as close as possible as any DSLR will do.

Sorry if I was not clear. What I´m asking is simply if the GH series´ lcd works like a regular camcorder LCD, meaning what you see on it is absolutely what you´re going to get once you play it back. The reason I´m asking is because I used to have a GF1 and it was not like that at all. When I started recording and adjusted the lenss´iris the lcd would get darker but then it would get brighter again straight away like it was on auto preview or something. I want to be able to set up the shots in advance without having to hit record to see what the shot is actually going to look like...is this possible?

I have never experienced that with the GH2.

When you have the GH2 in M movie mode (I think that is what its called) The screen reflects changes in ISO, Aperture etc. What you see is what you get as far as ISO and Aperture are concerned.

The biggest complaint most people have with the GH2 is that when you hit record there is a green tint of a Gamma shift that happens. That is what your image will look like. So if your worried about the image pre-record to when you hit record that is the biggest thing. I have seen examples of it being a more severe shift at higher ISO. To me I get used to it and like most of DSLR shooting it is just a compromise you find workarounds.

So, from what you guys are saying this the GH2 has this function but the GH1 doesn´t, right? Not even in video mode?

Anyone?

Another question, IQ wise if you put the best hacked GH1 vs the best hacked GH2 is there a noticeable difference?

You have that view on GH-1 in "camera-icon" mode..you will see when you stop down lens..

Difference between HACKED GH1 and GH2 is in HDMI output while recording..and GH1 have a little better native ISO for indors..and GH2 have slighly more detail ( resolution?)..
