F35: Pana EVF

The Panavision EVF pictured there is an OLED unit they introduced in 2010. I can't tell you much more about it, but I can give you a bit of history on their finders, which may be of interest...

Back in the early 00s, a lot of film DoPs moving to the HD cameras could not get over the black and white CRT finder. Sony's own efforts were never stellar, so a company called Accuscene built a hideously expensive ($20,000/£12,000 at the time) unit based around a chip from a high end home theatre projector (I think). The thing was very large, heavy, but produced an absolutely brilliant picture for the most part. Not perfect technology, but sharper than any other finder I ever used (the new OLED included).

Until recently, the Accuscene website was still online but I can't find it.

Accuscene got bought out by Panavision, because they don't like having other people's stuff bolted onto their cameras. Here is a picture of me with the "accuscene" finder

...and here is Panavision's F900 finder:

More than a passing resemblance ;)

I don't know the specifics of what went on, but the company and its founder/brains were eventually bought out by RED and tasked with producing a cheaper version of their finder for RED's new camera. Hence the size and shape of the original RED finder. Sadly, it didn't have the quality as it was about an eighth of the price.

I am passing by Panavision UK soon so I will stick my head in their digital imaging department and ask about that finder
