PAL user question please

Was disappointed to open up the box, read the manual and find out that the DVX100AE only shoots 25p and 50i, however reading another thread gives me a little reassurance.

My question is that the NTSC seems to have 24p, 30 and 60, so what does the PAL camera have? I know there is 25p and 50i but is there the equivalent of 30p? If so where is it on the camera please?

The Pal camera has 25p and 50i. Don't be disappointed. You have the perfect camera. Be glad you don't have to use NTSC. BTW you have higher resolution. Your camera has 720x576 against 720x480. Don't be confused about the numbers. You want the magic number 24 because film has 24fps. But film is more than just the 24 frames per sec. And people are using sometimes more than 24fps or less than 24fps in filmmaking. In Europe the 25fps even with filmcamera been used to make TV-series. Don't ask for 24p, you have progressive and a higher resolution, the rest is up to you how your film gonna be.

No, a PAL DVX does not have a 30p frame rate. The underlying reason is that the PAL frame is larger than the NTSC frame (720 x 576 for PAL versus 720 x 480 for NTSC) and at 25p or 50i it is at the data rate limit for the miniDV format. In an NTSC format camera, the 24p is "fit' into the 60i frame rate by using pull-up, since it is effectively less data to begin with, it can be made to fit. The final data rate (pixel depth * frame rate) nets out to the same for both NTSC or PAL; so a PAL frame at 30p would exceed the limit by 20%.

What Sergej said is true.
also the films in TV (and DVD) in europe are shown at 25p fps since you can't really tell the difference from 24fps.

Thanks for the replies, I certainly can rest easier now, just two more questions please.

1. I will be making some music videos to start with, so do I use 25p (f5) or Cine (f6)?

2. Can I set the camera to record at say 15 f/s or even 60 f/s if I require, i.e. am I restricted to either the 25p or 50i?

1. the cine gamma is the most used for music videos. obviously it depends on the artistic message you want to deliver.
2. The only allowed frame rates are 25p and 50i. the only thing you can change is the shutter speed, slowing it down to 1/15 s and more. the resulting footage will always be 25p (if shooting 25p), but each frame will be captured with a longer exposure (giving a 'motion blur' look). That can be some sort of effect look. You can make the shutter faster, obtaining some sort of 'gladiator' fight scene look.
Also, within a 25p project, shooting a clip at 50i you will be able to obtain a smoother slow motion in post slowing it down 50% (losing some resolution).

in the pal the difference between f5 and f6 is that f5 shot with thick lines and f6 shoot with thin.

I always shoot thin. So go with f6.

Seriously. Look around here, there are hundreds of posts about pulldown removal, 24pa problems, etc.. Be glad you don't have to deal with any of that. Just pop in your camera to PC/Mac and capture your 25p without worrying about any of that stuff.

I also have the PAL camera, and a friend brought over his NTSC DVX -- the PAL makes a nicer image, so don't worry. :)

If your clients are exclusively in PAL-land, then you only need 25P. Half of my clients require NTSC, but it's easily converted from PAL and still looks great.

And the work-flow is soooo much easier!
