hello all,
i got handed a project which consists of a stack of DVCAM tapes...all PAL. How can I convert then to NTSC which is what my client wants. I do not want to do any kind of AVI, software conversion...is there any piece of hardware out there that I can play these off to output ntsc. I am currently using a DSR-50.

thanks for the help!

After alot of researches and tests of converting NTSC=>PAL PAL=>NTSC I would say that Canopus Edius 4.5 is not only the cheepest, but as well the BEST way of conveting.

thanks for that, but i am looking for more of a hardware solution...for instance, i have a "world" vhs deck that will play ntsc, pal and secam, you can then select the output format. the tapes i am working with are DVCAM, so does anyone know of a deck or processor that can do something similar?
thanks

I don't think there are any DV/DVCam players that will convert PAL tapes the way you mention. And this is something I have already made some research about.

You have two ways to do it:

1) Hardware: PAL player > PAL to NTSC converter > NTSC recorder. Quality will depend on converter, going from consumer quality to broadcast quality.

2) Software: Canopus Procoder 2 can convert from PAL to NTSC, and that's the one I use. I think DVFilm has a converter too. I have never compared them with hardware converters, particularly broadcast types.

I think it would be really cool if there were a place that could do high quality standards conversions for a small fee. By now you would expect a big city like LA to have a facility like this. Oh well, maybe in the future.

There are a ton of places that can do the conversion, but I don't know if the OP has the budget for it as "high quality" and "small fee" typically don't go hand in hand.

thanks for the insight milksac...i am very aware of the dub houses that do this. what i was looking for was an alternative to the $350 estimate i got from lighting dubs.
