PAL-M v. NTSC

Looking at the specs, PAL-M looks nearly (though not exactly) identical to NTSC.

Who uses PAL-M, why, and what's the potential compatibility with NTSC?

Woo-Hoo Brazil represent!

Brazil uses PAL-M, as far as I know it's the only country that does.

PAL-M is sorta like NTSC with the colors encoded PAL-style. i.e. it's 29.97 like NTSC. When playing PAL-M stuff on NTSC it comes out black & white, with flickers of color popping in here and there.

TV sets here in Brazil are made to take NTSC as well though nowadays. I have my NTSC DVX hooked up to a PAL-M set here for editing and it works just dandy. I've also heard that DVDs here are just encoded NTSC cause there's such broad compatibility for it.

So unless someone is using a DVD player from like the 70s it should be OK.
