Pal 25p and 50p settings. Let's share!

Dear all,

I just purchased a PAL camera, and would like to know the best possible and reliable-with in camera preview- settings in PAL mode. I believe there are a bunch of us pal users that would love to have the same information that ntsc users are having with 24p and 30p.

Can any of the mods make a sticky post about Pal Settings?

Anyway, I'm looking for these settings:

AVCHD 1080p 25 best stable settings (what card required?)

AVCHD 720p best stable settings

Mjpeg 4:2:2 720p 25 and 720p 50 settings

All I want are settings that produce superior results to Sony XDCAM codec, or similar to panasonics AVCHD encoding in the HMC150

Thanks all, its just its been very, very difficult to sort out the PAL information on the threads. I'm aware that all you brave "developers" are from ntsc land, but we here at PAL land sure would be grateful for some help!

test it yourself =) why wait for others? as for settings its all interchangeable in my eyes cause its just upping bitrates. you can got that step further and tweak the settings if you think it is not optimised for PAL but I think you have to be a ninja to spot any qualitative difference if there is any at all. we are lucky in that we do not have to worry about pulldown to 25p.

that said, use the stable settings already that have already been nutted out in the stickies and threads and tweak them if you see fit. My personal piece of advice is to shoot with the stock settings first to get familiar then move onto the patch, you will appreciate it more. the camera already shoots brilliantly as is.

Just took the plunge finally...

Just took the plunge finally...

I had PAL GH1, now GH13

Using PTool 3.40d, only AVCHD options were patched.

SD_Card=Sandsik Extreme Class 10
Camera=GH1 v1.32
[Settings]
Version increment=1
Prevent version compare=Checked
Native 24p/25p=Checked
Video Bitrate FHD/SH=50000000
Video Bitrate H=50000000
Video Bitrate L=32000000
Overall Bitrate=56000000
Limiting Bitrate=60000000
Preset bitrate=500
Preset bitrate 2=500

Did some frenzied panning on foliages that would have brought the codec to its knees before, but now it holds up. The clips average about 42 Mbps.

Need to shoot more to see if I get any card error, but this certainly a huge improvement.

Going to double check those setting's today

Going to double check those setting's today

With Np checked and unchecked.

I think Np footage looks superior but sometimes I feel its a bit "stroby" not sure why or that was because it was a bit buggy before. The wrapper stuff looks fab anyway, the p would just make it even more awesome than where were at, which, is a very nice place. Just looking at the detail in field-corn-wheat shots and the sheer lack of "smudging" "mud" and general flutter in the footage and its night and day from the original.

First, battery to be charged!

PS, Vitaly, cant wait to try the bracketing option in stills, if its what I think it is, yeh, you've come up trumps again!

The truth is, my gh1 didnt arrive yet. Technically I own the camera, but its still not here- had to import it from HK. So no testing from me...yet :)

Thanks to those sharing. I'm anxious to compare the GH1 results vs my 5D and 7D!

You won't be unhappy. I went from the 5D and 7D and the image feel over all is superior in the GH13. I am happy (finally) with a camera. I love the color and the info you can pull from highlights in post. I have compared the GH13 to 7D and the 7D blows out where the Gh13 does not.

I tried, but there was an error when taking shots with leaves/grass on a tripod. Transcend 16GB class 10 (PAL camera), FHD, 1/50s ISO 100.

I think that with PTool 3.40, Vitaliy seems to have really helped the AVCHD 1920/1080 25p native settings because, like some others I now seem to get 'away with it', where previously I was crashing on detailed/tripod testing.

With SanDisk 16Gb Extreme 30mBs cards I'm using similar settings to those given by Black Ste earlier.

Just shot many long takes at a airshow on two consecutive days and only lost one take....when the battery ran out without my noticing and the file didn't save. Lens is the 14-140 stock one.
No take recorded longer than just over 4Gb, which I believe is a limit that will apply still.

The GH-1 is my 'B camera' to a 5DMk2 and it now stands up well in comparison.

If you are using the latest PTool (v3.40d), then you can find them here:

Patches for testers - AVCHD Movie Mode - AVCHD Compression.

I did few more tests with the setting mentioned earlier in this thread and so far no card error. The scenes included very detailed grass and shots while driving (things where the camera used to puke before) and all were very smooth. There are some rolling shutter effects in the speeding vehicle shots, taken from side windows, 90 degrees to the vehicle direction. The lens used earlier were the 20mm and today was 14-140 at around 70-100mm range. All hand held, some with barely any motion and some with frenzied pan.

I got the camera freezing in a curious way during playback, but not related to the video capture or playback of the recorded clip.

I was checking if the highly detailed clip I got was playing ok and was happy it did. While scrolling back (left arrow), camera suddenly froze. Only removing the battery could make the camera work again. As I shot more clips, I could scroll back and play previous clips. Suddenly I realized that the camera freezing when scrolling back to a particular clip which I had shot with original firmware re-instated. While in playback mode, If I zoomed out using using the thumb wheel to list thumbs of multiple clips, I could select any clip and do the playback. It crashes only when the individual clip is previewed in full screen and when attempting to go back to a clip made of the original firmware.

So I guess once the firmware patch is applied, you should clear the card off all previous clips from original or even an different patch to one that you have currently installed. A formatted and clean card would be the best advise. Don't know if it has been mentioned here before.

I am going to shoot some charts, on tripod, zoom, etc later today. Will post the details later.

So far it is holding up fantastic

MJPEG 25 p?

MJPEG 25 p?

Hi
The opening question in this thread were curious on Mjpeg as well on 25 p
"Mjpeg 4:2:2 720p 25 and 720p 50 settings"

I don't have had the time to continue my tests but last time I tried (before the ptool 3.4) I got the impression that Mjpeg don't work with 25p (and that is what we need to use it for TV here in Europe).

Nobody has answered this question, but I guess that Mjpeg 25p, if it is possible, must be a very interesting option for us that wants to use GH13 for TV distribution. Does anybody know?

When testing, could you, please, print the attached Crunchy chart (from Visio or pdf reader), put GH1 on a tripod and send the results?

crunchy, your chart of death do not fail for once :) (sorry, I meant to say, shooting the chart generates card error, as explained in the paragraph below) [amended to add clarity]

I managed to freeze the camera after 2-3 seconds of shooting. I shot on tripod, indoor under lights as well as outdoor and the result was the same with 14-140 or 20 mm lens. I can shoot your chart hand held; in fact slight motion somewhat ensure there is no card error. It is problem only on static high detail scenes. Shot some grass and as long as there was some motion, everything was fine. Once the camera was kept still it generateed card error. The peak mbits I could manage was 42.6, got while shooting the card.

I guess in real world scenarios, the settings I used are less likely to fail as long the aim is to shoot motion and not still. I would wager that even if there is no motion, as long as the scene is varied but detailed, the card would still keep pace with the settings. Need to do that.

The failure on the grass when held still is a bit of concern. May be I need to bring down the higher values and carry that patch in a separate card as a backup measure.

I will try to post some videos on Vimeo.

This is very interesting! So, even on a tripod it does not fail? What card are you using and what are the other camera settings?

The same happens to me. While shooting grass on a tripod, it often freezes. Since this happens in my backyard it concerns me. I suppose that even higher stress would be slightly moving the camera when using high shutter speed (e.g. 1/500s of faster).

Sorry for the confusion. I will modify the post so as not to confuse people. No, I meant it failed on the chart. Chart of death lives up to its reputation.
