PAL: 17Mbps vs 24Mbps

How bad is 17Mbps 50i against 24Mbps 24p when it comes down to fast motion? We have seen that 24Mbps coder stand darn well against even higher bitrates of GH13, but what about 17Mbps? Did anyone do any tests?

I know it's not the right season in Europe for foliage tests, but maybe Aussies or people in Asia could have done some.

I shoot a lot of very fast motion (camera and subject) with 50i at 17Mbps and it's definatly better than 24 or 25p even after 50i is deinterlaced and finally exported as 25p for web delivery.

I use Vegas to convert the original 50i clips to 50p, export in Cineform 50p and re-import to edit that. That gives me the best, cleanest results and options for slowmo if i want.

Shooting 50p would be ideal, but try finding a suitable cam in 50p for shooting from a jetski backwards on a rough Ocean that you can hand hold for 2hours at a time, not many options.

Lately i've been testing Gh13 720p 50fps @ 1/250 shutter, OIS lens, average 32Mbps and it's great, blur free sharp individual frames, very little jello and codec holds up very well. Nice clean separation between subject and background, ideal for dropping into Mercalli. Controlling the GH13, now that's the hard part, not exactly a camcorder form factor....and GH13 is not so good in auto modes, especially focus and exposure.

I guess it comes back to what you call fast motion and whether that includes camera movement as well as subject. Try everything see what you like. I shoot sports so i love 50/60p motion, deep DOF (even with high shutter strobing on pans).

You land based shooters have it easy, tripods and both feet on the ground, i wish.

i courently shoot with GH13 40Mbs seting using lpowell AVCHD patch, can someone tell me of any problems shooting 60p native ',i would like to achchive 45Mbs
Could some point me to a link...thanks
 
Thanks for the props, Baitron. I'm working on final testing of a new GH13 patch, with 50Mbps 720p50/60 SH mode using a 20-frame GOP. Stay tuned, I expect to release it next week.

Oh yes! Nice to hear that the GH13 tweakers never say never. Excellent, and I look forwards to trying out LPowell's latest magic-potion.... thanks.
 
I also need a reliacle 24p seting using mpeg setings for a project tomorrow running @ about 40mbp 422 i am certain i can use the same setings
from Ipowell and just change to mpeg, i much rather if Ipowe sent me the settings....totaly trust him.
